Next week, our Year 6 children will be taking the statutory Year 6 assessments: SATs. This consists of 1 x Grammar & Spelling, 1 x Reading, 1 x Maths Arithmetic and 2 x Maths Reasoning assessments.
If your child is in Year 6, they are invited to come into school at 8:15am every day this week; they will be provided with a light breakfast and will have time to socialise and enjoy a relaxing start to each day. It is vitally important that all Year 6 children are in school on time next week.
We are so proud of how hard our Year 6 children have worked this year. As we are now in the last few days before SAT's, we would like to take this opportunity to wish our Year 6 pupils all the best for next week. It is important that pupils remember that they have been very well prepared for these tests and can only do their best on the day. This is all that we ask. With this in mind, here is this weekend's homework:
Go for a bike ride
Read a book
Watch your favourite TV programme
Laugh until your tummy hurts!
Play with your friends or siblings
Have fun at a Coronation Street Party
Bake something yummy
Spend time with the people you love
Rest
Eat sweets/chocolate/ice cream
Spend some time on your favourite hobby
Our class and team photos are taking place on Monday 15th and Friday 19th May. We understand that there are various events taking place on both of these days, including Year 3 swimming. Please be reassured that the schedule has been created so that no child will miss their class photos.
Monday 15th May: Year 6 and team photos
Friday 19th May: Year 3, 4 and 5, and team photos.
As the weather is getting warmer, please ensure that your child is bringing a water bottle to school each day. On hotter days, they may require sunhats and suncream.
Omer (5M) has been researching and reading all about the current pollution crisis in British rivers and has taken it upon himself to help raise money for the Rivers Trust. If you would like to sponsor him (even £2), he would be incredibly grateful.
We are so proud of Omer for being dedicated to something that he is passionate about. Well done!
Thank you to our wonderful families who brought in donations for our Wild Garden area on Friday morning. Your generosity is so appreciated. All of this equipment will be used in the coming months to improve our Year 6 garden and to make it a place for both our children and nature to thrive!
On Wednesday 10th May (weather dependent!), we would love some help to complete the first phase of this garden project which will be to turn over the soil and add the new compost to the garden area. We have identified some plants that we will keep and some that will need weeding. Parents and children are invited - please bring your own tools if possible! Refreshments will be available. We anticipate that we will need volunteers between 3:30-4:30pm so this hopefully shouldn't take up too much of your time. If you would be interested in volunteering, please complete this Google Form.
This week, with an idea formed by Sahanna (4F), children across the school wrote a wishlist of the different books that they would like to see in their library and their classrooms.
We have collated this wishes and have put together an Amazon Wish List, which can be found here. If parents and families wish, there are over a hundred books that children are desperate to read on the list and these can be ordered as a present to our school. Alternatively, if you notice a book on the list that your children no longer read, we are always grateful for any donations!
It has also been suggested by our children that, on a birthday, rather than bringing sweets in for their classmates, children choose a book on the list that they would like to donate to their class. This also falls in line with our commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles. On the order, there is an option to leave a message - you can specify which class the book is for. As ever, we recognise that money can be tight so please note that this is entirely optional. Any support is always appreciated.
Thank you to the Friends of Cheam Common, who purchased the Coronation Bookmarks for all of our children, and who made a contribution towards the memorial teddy bears that your children will be bringing home today.
The Royal Horticultural Society has launched a competition inviting children to design the front cover for their magazine, The Garden. You can find out more information here.
Walk to School Week 2023 takes place next week from 15-19th May. This year's challenge encourages children to travel actively to school every day of the week. With this year's theme being 'Walk with Wildlife', children will meet various animal friends along the way, they'll learn about the important reasons to walk and the difference it can make for individuals, communities and the planet!
Why the walk to school matters
Happier children: It’s been proven that children who do some form of exercise, especially a walk before school, do better in class because they arrive refreshed, fit and ready to learn.
Less congestion: During morning peak traffic times, one in five cars on the road are taking children to school, contributing to congestion, air pollution and carbon emissions.
Cleaner air: The school run alone is responsible for generating half a million tonnes of CO2 per year (which is more than some small countries!). Imagine what we could achieve if we began converting some of these rides to strides?
So, celebrate with us next week and get walking to school each day, there may even be some prizes in store!
🎶 Big Sing Rehearsal: On Tuesday, members of our Choir attended a rehearsal for their Big Sing event at Stanley Park. Children were exceptionally behaved and we can't wait for the main event later this term!
🏀 Year 6 Netball Match vs Stanley Park: On Wednesday, our Year 6 Netball team had their last game of the season against Stanley Park. It was a high-scoring game, with the A team game ending in a 10-10 draw! The B team just lost out in another tight game.
🏊♀️ Y4-6 Swimming Trials: On Thursday, over forty children attended trials for the upcoming swimming gala later this term. Children were asked to complete a number of strokes of their choice and showed phenomenal encouragement and perseverance throughout the afternoon. Well done!
🥏 Y3/4 Ultimate Frisbee Festival: On Thursday, one child from each of our Year 3 and 4 classes was invited to take part in the Sutton Sports Partnership's Ultimate Frisbee Festival. The children all learned a new skill and had fun learning all about a brand-new sport.
⚽ Year 5 Football Friendly Tournament: On Friday afternoon, our Year 5 Boys' Football Team attended a friendly tournament at Cheam Park Farm Primary, where they played against other LEO schools.
👑 Coronation Events: On Friday, children spent some time completing activities to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III. We saw some incredible outfits based on monarchs and red, white and blue!

SEND & Inclusion Updates!
Young Carers at Cheam Common
At Cheam Common Junior Academy, we hold a weekly small group session to support children across the school who fulfil the role of ‘Young Carer’ because they have a sibling or parent with serious health issues, special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).
We want to celebrate the important role our Young Carers play, but also recognise that they may face challenges and pressures not shared by the general school population.
The group meets during assembly time and is led by Mrs Hart.
If you would like your child to take part please complete this form.
If you have any questions about the group, please feel free to contact us at ccjsend@leoacademytrust.co.uk

‘Small Change, Big Difference’ Parent Group for parents of children with a diagnosis of autism.'
We are also looking to host another Small Change, Big Difference course with Adapt to Learn. For those that are unfamiliar with this course, we run this as an alternative to the Early Bird programme. Some information about this is below. If you are interested in attending this course, please email: sutton@nas.org.uk and we'll be in touch.
The aim is to empower parents, supporting them to help their children by developing an in-depth understanding of autism. Taking a positive approach, we will explore, share and discuss practical strategies to help develop communication skills, pre-empt and manage behaviour and gain confidence and resilience.
During the sessions, parents will be given the opportunity to make connections, gain support and feel less isolated.
Each course comprises of four x 1.5-hour sessions and will cover a range of topics.
