We are extremely proud to introduce Sian, our new Head Girl and Boris, our new Head Boy. They are joined by their deputies for 2019/20: Emma & Isla and Marcus & Eddie. Congratulations on your appointments; six outstanding ambassadors for Cheam Common Junior and role models for us all.
Congratulations to our new Year 6 Pupil Leadership Team who received their ties in assembly. We look forward to seeing you in action across the school this year. You will be fantastic ambassadors for Cheam Common.
On Wednesday, Year 6 were lucky enough to visit the Thames Young Mariners Centre in Richmond. We knew we had a day of outdoor adventures and team-building ahead of us so wrapped up warm, arrived at school early and we were ready to go!
After a short journey, we arrived at the chilly but sunny centre. We had three activities to complete throughout the day: woodland skills, problem-solving games and kayaking.
For the woodland skills session, we ventured to the outskirts of the centre and into the woods. Here, we learnt how to build fires and spark a flame. At the end, we were treated to some hot chocolate around the fire; it was a perfect way to end the sessions.
The second session was a variety of team-building and problem-solving games. These varied per group but some highlights were the team see-saw, where we had to work together to balance, and the blindfold trail, which was focused around building trust and giving directions.
Finally, we arrived at kayaking - the highlight of the day for most of us! After a short safety briefing, we got into our kayaks and were off! Our instructors organised plenty of games for us to play out on the water and our kayaking skills improved considerably! At the end, we had the chance to plunge into the lake! Although the lake was freezing, most of us ‘jumped’ at the opportunity!
We had the most fantastic day and would like to thank all of the amazing instructors at Thames Young Mariners!
After reaching the ‘Danone’ National Finals last year at Birmingham FC, Cheam Common were looking to emulate last season's success.
Last week saw Cheam Common progress through to the final Borough round of the competition. Bandon Hill, Avenue, Cheam Common and our hosts Cheam Park farm all had qualified from their respective groups last week and were trying to represent Sutton in the next round which would be against all teams from Surrey.
Our first game was against Cheam Park Farm. We started really well but gave away two goals in quick succession. Bolu had a couple of attempts to try and come back but unfortunately it was too late and we lost our first game.
The second game was against the eventual winners Bandon Hill. After going two goals down, we showed tremendous character to score 2 goals and level the game. Due to losing our first game we simply had to win and as we committed players forward we were hit against the run of play with the last kick of the game resulting in a 3-2 loss Vs Bandon Hill.
With the pressure off we played our final game vs Avenue and started brilliantly with Bolu scoring after a minute. Two tremendous strikes from the Avenue put them 2-1 ahead before a great finish from Luke. T equalised and the game finished 2-2.
We finished 3rd in the group meaning we didn’t qualify for the next round. We did however compete really well in every game. The boys will learn from the experience and look forward to competing in upcoming league games and cup competitions.
To continue the success of our RE Days, we are asking for volunteers to visit Cheam Common to help our children learn about the different religions from those who practice these faiths.
With thanks to our volunteers last year, we saw how excited the children were when learning from a member of the community when looking at traditions, religious texts and traditional clothing. We would love to spread this great experience across all religions and RE days! If you would like to volunteer to discuss your religion and beliefs to a year group, then please contact your child's class teacher or Miss Holloway.
On Friday 18th October we will be carrying out our first RE day of the year. The first religion we will be learning all about is Hinduism. Year 3 will have a special Diwali presentation assembly on Tuesday 8th October that will be run by the first of our volunteers.
Please note the date of the Orchestra & Choir Christmas Concert to Parents will be on Wednesday 4th December at 9:15am. We hope to see many of you there to support the children and see what they have been working on this term.
Last year our Year 6 children continued their education at the following schools. We are very proud of the progress they made during their time at Cheam Common Junior Academy and wish them the best for their future.
If your child is in Year 6, please remember you have until Thursday 31st October to apply for your child’s secondary school place. We recommend applying for the full total of six schools to ensure you have the best possible chance of being given a school you prefer. If you only apply for one school you may not be successful and then have limited options of where to send your child. You can apply for your child's place via the following link: https://www.sutton.gov.uk/admissions
Tuesday 15th October – 4pm - 8pm
Thursday 17th October - 3:30pm - 6pm
A reminder to book your Parents' Evening appointment if you haven't already done so.
You will have a chance to visit your child's classroom and see their work so far this term. All appointments will take place in the school hall.
If you have changed your email address or are having problems accessing the system, please let the office know.
Our Scholastic Book Fair will be at Cheam Common during both of our Parents' Evenings. Every book that is purchased earns the school points to use to purchase free books for our classroom libraries.
Thank you for your support.

This week’s book is ‘The Girl with Space in her Heart' by Lara Williamson and is from the Year 6 book list.
Remember to write a book review for a book you read and get your bookmark stamped by your teacher.
The Girl with Space in her Heart by Lara Williamson
Meet Mabel Mynt, a young teenage girl knows a lot about space, like how we feel connected to the stars because we are all made of stardust. And that Mum's new boyfriend, Galactic Gavin, has eyes that twinkle like Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. And that sometimes the perfect place for her sister, Terrible Topaz, would be to disappear into a black hole. But Mabel doesn't know how to fill the space in her heart that Dad left when he walked out. And so, she sets out on a mission of discovery. A heart-warming and laugh-out-loud story about learning that love is never lost and change doesn't have to be scary.
For those that enjoyed ‘Wonder’, ‘No Ballet Shoes in Syria’ and ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’, comes a story that deals with real-life issues that so many can relate to. A family falling apart, a young girl who suffers with a lack of confidence, social anxiety and the perceptions of mental health.
You can find your child's Battle of the Books suggested book list on our school website via the following link:
http://www.cheamcommon.org.uk/website/supporting_the_curriculum/331291
Here you will find most books listed, however we are continually updating and showcasing our recommended reads as new books are released.
Welcome to our weekly science bulletin. Here you will find interesting facts and activities all about science! Every week we will discuss a new topic and we will also be finding out what each year group have been learning about in their science lessons. If you complete the follow up activities or research the topics please present your findings to Miss Lane. Your work may even make onto our twitter page!
This term, Year Four have been learning all about electricity. They started by learning about Thomas Edison and his contribution to the discovery of electricity. They have also been discussing what makes a circuit work and how just one small thing could stop the electricity from flowing. They have carried out lots of investigations, using a variety of their working scientifically skills and scientific vocabulary. They have learned that in order for the electricity to pass through, there had to be wires connected to both the positive and negative ends of the batteries and that the more batteries there were, the brighter the bulb.
Over to you!
Who do you think is correct in the above image? Why not ask Year Four what else they have learnt about electricity?
Don’t forget to present your findings to Miss Lane and Year Three!

NAS Sutton are really pleased to welcome Dr Alexandra Gregory, who is an Educational Psychologist and also a sibling of somebody with autism.
She is going to be running a half day workshop for both Parents and Siblings which will cover the following:
Parents and their children will remain in the same hall for the afternoon, although at times they may separate off into different groups.
Refreshments will be provided.
IMPORTANT: Please note that this workshop is only for Siblings and not for those kids with a diagnosis of Autism. This is to protect the siblings and give them a chance to speak openly and honestly about their feelings. We ask everyone to respect this. We are also limiting the age to those of 8 years and over on this occasion so that they are of a similar age group. If this workshop runs well we will run it again for the lower age range.
Places must be booked in advance through the link below:
