On Friday morning, six children from Year 3 & 4 travelled to Avenue Primary School for the Sutton Borough, New Age Kurling, London Youth Games Event. There were three groups of three, with first place from each group going into the final round. We got off to a great start where we beat Foresters 650 to their 610 points. We then faced Cheam Park Farm in our final group game where we won 740 points to their 700 which qualified us in first place of our group and into the final to face All Saints Carshalton and Hackbridge Primary. We started well in our first game vs All Saints Carshalton where we won 680 points to their 600 points. Hackbridge then played All Saints Carshalton and won which meant it all came down to Cheam Common vs Hackbridge. Unfortunately we were defeated by Hackbridge Primary 710 points to 705 points. Congratulations to Hackbridge on finishing 1st place and qualifying for London Youth Games. The team represented the school with great passion and thoroughly enjoyed the morning; they were a credit to the school.
On Wednesday 29th January, the netball teams played their first matches of the Spring term. This match was against St Cecilia’s Primary who we haven’t played this season.
Match 1 - A team
The girls have been working hard in training to improve both speed and accuracy of passing as well as dodging into space. The game started quickly with the team all working hard to pass the ball quickly to GS who scored one after another. However as the half went out some old habits crept back into our game and the opposition woke up and began to intercept the ball. Even so by the end of the first half, the score was 6 - 0 to us. The second half was a lot tougher and the team had to work really hard to stop them from scoring many goals. The game ended 8 - 1 to Cheam Common, but the game was tighter than the score suggests and all the girls had to give it their all. Well done!
Match 2 - B team
Having watched the A team play, the B team were keen to get started. Both in the first and second half the team worked hard and intercepted many balls but we definitely had more possession of the ball. Both GS and GA shot really well however it wasn’t our day! All the team worked well together and passed the ball quickly and accurately, using space on court well. The game ended up goalless but the whole team played really well and should be pleased with their performance today.
Next week is another home game, against Holy Trinity on Tuesday 4th February.
On Friday afternoon, the Year 6 Boys' football squad travelled to Sutton Utd to face Westbourne in their 5th league fixture. We got off to a really fast start playing some really good football. Zac P found Zac H with a great through ball which Zac H finished into the bottom corner 1-0! Omari then made it 2-0 in quick succession with a great strike from outside the box that fired onto the crossbar and in! 2-0. Just before half time Omari got his second of the game as he received a great ball into the box from Joseph M for him to finish into the bottom corner. 3-0. A lapse in concentration allowed Westbourne to get a goal back as their forward nipped in front of Luca to head in. 3-1. Just after half time Luke T passed through to Ben R who fired past the Westbourne keeper with a great strike! 4-1. Just before the final whistle Ben R got his second goal of the game, with a great pass from Jake to assist him. 5-1!
Well done to all the boys on their victory! With two league games to go and sitting in 2nd place - it's all still to play for!
Player of the match - Joseph M
On Wednesday afternoon our Year 6 Boys' football team headed over to Wallington to face Wallington Primary School in the 2nd round of the Borough Cup.
We got off to a great start where Ben R found Zac H in a great space who fired the ball past the Wallington goalkeeper! 1-0.
Shortly after Benji stepped out of defence on an amazing run around 3 defenders and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper! 2-0
Cheam Common's defence came under some pressure from the Wallington forward and with the bobble of the pitch unfortunately saw a ball go past Jake for an own goal! 2-1.
Just before half time Luke T extended our lead with a great cross from Joseph M to find Luke T where he headed home! 3-1.
Straight after half time we made it 4-1! This time Luke and Joseph reversed roles with Luke setting up Joseph with a great through ball for Joseph to fire into the top corner!
Shortly after, Joseph and Zac H played a quick one two around the Wallington defence for Zac H to smash home his 2nd of the game! 5-1.
Jake and Zac P combined well to play out from the back on a very bobbly pitch who then found Zac H on the half turn, who then slid Ben R in who finished well straight past the Wallington goalkeeper! 6-1.
With seconds to go Omari made it 7-1 with a great solo run and then strike from outside of the box and into the top corner!
Player of the match - Zac P
On Thursday 16th January, our Girls’ Football team played their next league game against Dorchester. It was an extremely tough game but we had many attacking opportunities, with Evie hitting the post twice and Aniya hitting the crossbar. We went ahead early with a clinical finish from Evie. Our defence remained solid for the remainder of the game, with stand out performances from Lula, Chloe and Zaima. Evie managed to wrap up the game in the final minutes with a fantastic run to secure another win for the girls.
The girls were back in action on Monday 20th January, in the quarter finals of the Borough Cup. We were playing Stanley Park, who we had faced in a tight 3-0 win at the beginning of the season so we were prepared for a gruelling contest.
This game proved to be one of our best performances of the season. Our defence remained strong, we had some fantastic saves from goalkeeper, Ailah, and our midfield worked together as a team throughout the game. With goals from Evie (2), Isla (2) and Ava, we won the game 5-0. This meant that we had progressed into the semi-finals, where we will face Barrow Hedges.
Congratulations girls and good luck for your next matches in both the league and cup!
After qualifying for the regional round in December, our Y6 Boys' football team competed at Kingsmeadow (Home of AFC Wimbledon) last week looking to book their place at the South Regional round with the winners competing at Wembley! The tournament took place on a chilly Thursday morning and we were joined by 8 top teams from across Merton, Kingston, Sutton & Wandsworth.
The first group game saw us get off to a winning start beating a strong Ravenstone school 2-1 with goals coming from Luke.T & Omari. Our second game saw us playing Sacred Heart who took the lead before a last minute Bolu strike saw us clinch a vital point. Our final group game was against the favourites Thomas Battersea who had won their first two group games convincely. Despite starting really sharp we found ourselves 1-0 down after a deflected strike. We then got our passing game going but after hitting the post and throwing players forward we were caught on the counter really late on meaning we lost 2-0 in our first defeat of the tournament.
Finishing the group in second place, we qualified for the Semi Final Vs 1st place Honeywell in Group 1. We started the game really sharp with some great passing and determined defending. The only goal came from a solo run by Bolu who jinked through 2 players before rounding the goalkeeper and rolling the ball into an empty net.
We were through to the final which would see us play Thomas Battersea who had previously beaten us in the qualifying rounds. We were determined to put in a strong performance and knew anything less would result in defeat. We started the game really well and found ourselves 1-0 up with a fantastic shot from Bolu. We seemed to shock Thomas Battersea with our high pressing and fast football and scored a few minutes later through a wonder strike from Luke.T. Thomas Battersea then scored a goal of their own to make it 2-1 before Bolu found himself in space and calmly slotted past the goalkeeper to make it 3-1. The game was not over and despite some unbelievable saves from our Benji B, Thomas Battersea scored with 2 minutes to go to make it 3-2. Some real dogged defending saw us hold out and win the final 3-2!
A fantastic achievement from the boys who can now look forward to the final qualifying round in Peterborough knowing the winners will get the opportunity to play a game on the famous Wembley turf!
Good Luck Boys! We are incredibly proud of your achievements so far!

Here is our attendance round up, with figures for each class since September. Our target for our attendance is 97%.
Well done to 3B, 3H, 4SM and 4S for their ‘gold’ attendance.
We hope we can get each class to a 'green' level of attendance for next week.
As the winter weather continues, lots of children may develop colds and coughs. Wherever possible, please send your child to school. Most often, once the school day is underway, children perk up. If they are too unwell to be at school, a member of the school office would contact home.
Please remember that our school gates close at 8:45am. Children who arrive after this time are missing a significant amount of learning time in the classroom as they begin fluency activities from the moment they arrive.
If you would like to discuss any issues with regards to attendance then please see Miss Gunner.
On Friday 7th February, our PTA will be running a Disco for children across the school. Please make a note of this date in your diary.
Year 3 and 4: 3:30-5:00pm
Year 5 and 6: 5:30-7:00pm
Tickets are £5 each and can be purchased from the school playground after school or from the School Office before school.
We hope to see many of you there!

Where The River Runs Gold by Sita Brahmachari
In a caste-divided, dystopian world, two children must risk everything to escape their fate and find the impossible in search of a better life. Shifa and her brother, Themba, live in Kairos City with their father, Nabil. The few live in luxury, whilst the millions like them crowd together in compounds, surviving on meagre rations and governed by Freedom Fields - the organisation that looks after you, as long as you opt in.
The bees have long disappeared; instead children must labour on farms, pollinating crops by hand so that the nation can eat. The farm Shifa and Themba are sent to is hard and cruel. Themba won't survive there and Shifa comes up with a plan to break them out. But they have no idea where they are - their only guide is a map drawn from the ramblings of a stranger. The journey ahead is fraught with danger, but Shifa is strong and knows to listen to her instincts - to let love guide them home. The freedom of a nation depends on it.
Inspired by current environmental concerns and tackling themes of inequality, courage and social justice, Where the River Runs Gold is an adventure built on the enduring hope of a better, fairer future. A brave, thought-provoking adventure by award-winning author, Sita Brahmachari.
