Volunteers needed for Summer Fair
The Friends Summer Fair is coming up soon - Saturday, 15th July. We have a fun day of games and activities planned for our wonderful Cheam Common families and we hope you will join us.
In order to make the day happen though, we need your help! We are looking for volunteers to help us set up, run the stalls and help clear up at the end.
The fair will run from 11am - 2pm. Set up will be from 9am and clear-up will be once the fair is finished.
Please use the sign-up sheet here https://volunteersignup.org/3YRXM to indicate the slots you are able to cover. They are split into sessions of one hour but if you can do more, please sign up for all you can offer.
When choosing your slot, note that the KS1 and KS2 choirs will be performing for about 20mins at 12.15 so if your child is singing, you may wish to bear that in mind when choosing your slots. If your Year 6 child wishes to sign up to help run a stall, they are very welcome to do so but we ask that you join them also.
To say thank you for helping us on the day, all volunteers will be entered into their own raffle! If you have any questions, please contact us at Friends_CCA@outlook.com.
Year 5 & 6 Sports Day
The postponed Year 3 & 4 Sports Day will now take place on the afternoon of Monday 17th July. More details will follow nearer the time.
Parking and waiting at drop-off and pick-up
We are strongly urging parents to think carefully about where they are parking at drop-off and pick-up. Residents along Kingsmead Avenue (especially those out of the Sutton Safe Streets Scheme) are repeatedly having their driveways blocked during these times; this can caused neighbours to miss appointments and meetings in recent weeks.
We thank parents for abiding by the Sutton Safe Streets regulations and for keeping the area directly outside of our school building safe for our children.
In addition, can we remind you that the street remains open to residents at all times and this means that cars may be driving in the road at drop-off and pick-up times. For this reason, we would advise against walking or scooting in the road and ask that you do not wait across resident's driveways.

Our Book Wishlist!
Children across the school wrote a wishlist of the different books that they would like to see in their library and their classrooms.
We have collated this wishes and have put together an Amazon Wish List, which can be found here. If parents and families wish, there are over a hundred books that children are desperate to read on the list and these can be ordered as a present to our school. Alternatively, if you notice a book on the list that your children no longer read, we are always grateful for any donations!
It has also been suggested by our children that, on a birthday, rather than bringing sweets in for their classmates, children choose a book on the list that they would like to donate to their class. This also falls in line with our commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles. On the order, there is an option to leave a message - you can specify which class the book is for. As ever, we recognise that money can be tight so please note that this is entirely optional. Any support is always appreciated.
Weekly School and Sporting News Stories
It was another busy week of events at Cheam Common!
🏥 NHS 75th Birthday Assembly: On Monday, we were lucky enough to be visited by staff from St George's Hospital (Tooting), who came in to explain the work that they do. The children loved hearing all about the roles and responsibilities that are involved in working in a hospital whilst also celebrating the NHS and 75 years of service!
🐲 Dragon's Den Challenge: On Monday, some of our Year 5 children travelled to Tiffin Girls' School, to take part in their Dragon's Den Challenge, organised by students. The aim of the day was to design, create and market their own perfume, culminating in selling this to the 'dragons'. We were delighted to be awarded 2nd place!
🎺 KS2 Sutton Music Festival: On Tuesday evening, twenty four of our Year 4 children were chosen to represent the school at the KS2 Sutton Music Festival. They took to the stage to perform 'March' and 'Cool F Blues' to a huge audience.
💷 Year 6 Fiver Challenge: On Thursday afternoon, our Year 6 children opened their Children's Market to the rest of the school. They had spent weeks creating their business ideas, purchasing products and designing advertising for their stalls. Together, they raised over £1,000, which will be used to subsidise some of the Year 6 end-of-year celebrations. Thank you!
🇬🇷 Year 5 Ancient Greece Day: On Friday, Year 5 immersed themselves in the culture of the Ancient Greeks. They dressed up for the occasion and took part in activities throughout the day which opened their eyes to what day-to-day life would have been like thousands of years ago!
🇪🇬 Year 3 Ancient Egypt Day: On Friday, Year 3 immersed themselves in the culture of the Ancient Egyptians. They were lucky enough to experience an immersive Egyptian Day with talks and activities set up by visitors. We absolutely loved seeing their outfits!
🎨🚀 Sutton Schools STEAM Fair: On Friday, members of our Arts and Science Councils attended the Sutton Schools STEAM Fair, at Sutton Grammar School. They attended workshops such as 'Beautiful Bridges', silk painting, finger knitting and a 'Gravity Take Off' event to end the day!

Young Carers at Cheam Common
At Cheam Common Junior Academy, we hold a weekly small group session to support children across the school who fulfil the role of ‘Young Carer’ because they have a sibling or parent with serious health issues, special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).
We want to celebrate the important role our Young Carers play, but also recognise that they may face challenges and pressures not shared by the general school population.
The group meets during assembly time and is led by Mrs Hart.
If you would like your child to take part please complete this form.
If you have any questions about the group, please feel free to contact us at ccjsend@leoacademytrust.co.uk

‘Small Change, Big Difference’ Parent Group for parents of children with a diagnosis of autism.'
We are also looking to host another Small Change, Big Difference course with Adapt to Learn. For those that are unfamiliar with this course, we run this as an alternative to the Early Bird programme. Some information about this is below. If you are interested in attending this course, please email: sutton@nas.org.uk and we'll be in touch.
The aim is to empower parents, supporting them to help their children by developing an in-depth understanding of autism. Taking a positive approach, we will explore, share and discuss practical strategies to help develop communication skills, pre-empt and manage behaviour and gain confidence and resilience.
During the sessions, parents will be given the opportunity to make connections, gain support and feel less isolated.
Each course comprises of four x 1.5-hour sessions and will cover a range of topics.
