School Updates

Spring Term Clubs

Information regarding Spring Term Clubs will be sent to parents on Monday 5th December. As we did at the beginning of the Autumn Term, you will be asked to fill out a short Google Form with your child's preference of clubs.

Clubs will be allocated as fairly as possible but, as we are sure you can imagine, ensuring that this is the case can be difficult with over 500 pupils. There is no first-come, first-served basis for your allocations so please take your time deciding which clubs your child is interested in.

The deadline for this form to be filled in will be Wednesday 7th December at 4pm. This is so that we can allocate clubs and let parents know before the end of term.

Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check update

Parents of Year 4 children may be aware that their children will be undertaking a statutory assessment later this year: the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check. This is an assessment which had its inaugural year in 2022, developed by the DfE to ensure that children leave Year 4 knowing their times tables up to 12 x 12.

Earlier this week, the DfE released new guidance on this assessment. You can find this information here if you wish to read it.

In the Spring Term, Miss Kelly (Maths Lead and Vice Principal) will be leading a parent workshop on what this assessment is, how it is carried out, and how best parents can prepare their children. Parents will be emailed and reminded about the workshop nearer the time.

Elf Run - Friday 9th December

As part of our Christmas celebrations, we will be taking part in the St Raphael’s Elf Run on Friday 9th December. This is also Christmas Jumper Day.

The Elf Run is a charity event organised by St Raphael’s hospice in Sutton. The money raised will help St Raphael’s to provide exceptional end of life care to almost 1,000 patients and their families every year who live in Merton & Sutton. 75% of their running costs rely on the incredible support and generosity of the community. During this difficult time for all of us, they need you now more than ever.

Children can come into school wearing a Christmas jumper (or just a warm jumper!) and will be provided with an elf hat for the run itself. The suggested donation per child is £1 - please note that this is optional.

To donate money to St Raphael's Hospice, simply scan the QR code above or visit this link.

Can you design our wild garden?

As you walk to school every day, you may have noticed the small outdoor space that we have outside some of the Year 6 classrooms. For the last few years, this space has been ignored and has been allowed to turn into an uninspiring piece of land, with little benefit to nature. And now, we need your help!

Children - we are looking for some inspiration for this outdoor space and we'd like to offer you the chance to design it! If you are interested in helping, please take an entry sheet from your class teacher (you may take more than one if you'd like!) or create your ideas online. We would like this area to be an oasis for both children and nature and are seeking designs from children who will think about how best to achieve this!

Deadline: End of the term (Friday 16th December)

Adults - in the new year, we will be looking for volunteers from our local community to help revitalise this space. This may involve giving up some time at a weekend to help dig up, plant, and generally help transform this outdoor space. Watch this space for more information!

Go Ape: Win a class trip by designing an official Christmas card!

The festive season is just over the horizon and Go Ape are inviting mini adventurers to take part in an all-new exciting Christmas challenge with the chance of winning a class trip to Go Ape!

They are calling all 4-11-year-olds to showcase their artistic skills and passion for adventure to be in with the chance of winning an action-packed class trip to Go Ape for their school AND a Go Ape family ticket for any national Go Ape site for themselves!

The winning design will be featured on Go Ape's Digital Christmas E-card with the winner's name, age and school included.

Visit this website for more information.

A new club for January: Tae Kwon Do!

We are extremely excited to welcome a new club to Cheam Common Juniors, which will be starting in January. TKD is a Tae Kwon Do club, specifically aimed at 7-11 year olds, which has been running successfully at other LEO schools.

During the first week back after the Christmas holidays, TKD will be running an assembly to show children what they could learn at these sessions.

Information about how to join this club will be re-shared when we share information about how to sign up for clubs in the next few weeks. It will also be re-shared after the assembly that children will watch in January. However, if you are confident that your child will enjoy this club, email hello@london-tkd.co.uk, stating that you are emailing from Cheam Common Juniors and that you are interested in signing up. Alternatively, visit their website for more information or see the flyer below for more information!

Doodle: Winter Challenge

The Doodle Winter Challenge is back, where children can earn virtual rewards by Doodling daily! Between the 1st and 24th December, children can unlock doors on Doodle Maths and English by earning stars. You can find out more information here. Good luck!

Secondhand books and board games

Do you have any secondhand books or board games that you no longer need? At Cheam Common, we would appreciate donations of any of these items. Books are always appreciated and board games are extremely useful, especially during wet play! Simply drop these into the office or ask your child to hand them to their class teacher. Thank you for your support in advance!

Weekly School and Sporting News Stories

Year 6 Pupil Leadership Roles

Over the next few weeks, we would like to introduce some of the pupils who have taken up our Year 6 Pupil Leadership roles.

This week, we would like to introduce our new Heads of the Library: Maia and Noah. These children often help Miss Kelly and Miss Walter-Simons redesign and tidy the library. Throughout the year, these children will also be in charge of organising reading to younger children and gathering feedback on how the library can improve.

James and Daniel win big at the weekend! 🏉

We were so proud to hear that two of our Year 5 children, James and Daniel, represented their local rugby club at the weekend: Sutton and Epsom. These two boys play regularly but this weekend was particularly momentous; their team managed to beat Saracens - one of the biggest rugby clubs in the country. Well done, boys!

If your children have any achievements that you'd be happy for us to share in the newsletter, please let us know!

Maggie's Carol Concert

On Thursday 1st December, some members of our Choir visited St John's Church to attend a carol concert organised by Maggie's Hospice, at the Royal Marsden. They sung some festive favourites and were exemplary role models to our school. Well done, everyone - you should be proud of yourselves. Thank you to the parents who also attended the help raise money for such a worthy cause.

We have been told that the event managed to raise £7,150 for the Royal Marsden. This money is enough to fund 243x 1:1 sessions with a clinical psychologist for patients to discuss their worries about upcoming and ongoing cancer treatment.

SEND & Inclusion Updates!

Young Carers at Cheam Common

At Cheam Common Junior Academy, we hold a weekly small group session to support children across the school who fulfil the role of ‘Young Carer’ because they have a sibling or parent with serious health issues, special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).

We want to celebrate the important role our Young Carers play, but also recognise that they may face challenges and pressures not shared by the general school population.

The group meets during assembly time and is led by Mrs Hart.

If you would like your child to take part please complete this form.

If you have any questions about the group, please feel free to contact us at ccjsend@leoacademytrust.co.uk
