On Tuesday, twenty children from Year 6 joined eighty other children from across our LEO academies and headed to Willesden Sports Centre to take part in the Brownlee Foundation Triathlon.
The children arrived and watched a video presentation from the Brownlee Brothers explaining the outline of the day. The children received their new swimming hats, a running top and some information about future triathlon events.
Next up was the main event! First the children had to compete a 50m swim of the pool, followed by a quick dart out of the pool, trainers and t-shirt on and then straight onto an 800m cycle, before finishing with a 300m run to reach the finish line!
The children were then greeted with their deserved medals and goodie bags as they crossed the line!
Every child put in great effort and determination to push themselves and do the very best they possibly could!
Thank you to the Triathlon Trust, Brownlee Foundation and LEO Academy for this amazing opportunity!
On Monday our Year 5 Boys' Football team travelled to Harrodians Independent School in Barnes for the 1st round of the Surrey cup.
Cheam Common took a little while to get warmed up and went 1-0 down after 2 minutes due to a well played ball by Harrodians down the left hand side.
The boys reacted well, kept their heads up and kept on creating chances with some excellent moves from Harry W and Omari which really started to put the pressure on Harrodians.
Still trailing 1-0, the boys continued to battle. Omari hit the crossbar twice and post once in a matter of minutes but still couldn't find the opening goal for Cheam Common! We found ourselves really unlucky to not be 2-1 up or at least 1-1 at half time.
At half time, Cheam Common brought on Samuel M who started very lively down the right hand side. The pressure really started to come onto Harrodians as they struggled to get out of their own half. With 12 minutes to play, Samuel M finds himself out on the right wing, takes on two players and smashes home to make it 1-1!
Harrodians restart the game and within seconds get in behind the Cheam Common defence but Luca W pulls off a great save!
Then with 6 minutes to play the ball falls to Harry W and with some great skill and trickery beats one defender and picks out a great pass to find Samuel M who fires home to get his second of the match!
With one minute to play Harrodians get a free kick just outside our box, up steps the home team's captain but Luca W pulls off a great save to push over the bar. Harrodians take the corner but is defended excellently by Cheam Common with a great header from Ryan. The referee blows and it’s full time! 2-1 to Cheam Common!
A really well contested close game between Cheam Common and Harrodians but Cheam Common came out trumps to move to the quarter finals of the Year 5 Surrey Cup!
On Tuesday, members from our School Council gathered all of your donations from our Harvest Festival and loaded the minibus to deliver them to Sutton Food Bank. The children were greeted by volunteers at the food bank who told them a bit more about the work they do and how the donations are used. We look forward to finding out the combined weight of all our donations and how many people we have helped. Thank you for all your support.
This week the NSPCC has visited our school and given an assembly to the whole school on how to stay safe and where to get help if children have any worries. Year 5 and 6 also took part in some workshops on on-line safety.
The School Council have decided to support the NSPCC and the fantastic work they do by holding one of their sponsored events at our school to help both fundraise and raise awareness of this great charity.
On Friday 4th October, all the children will take part in a sponsored workout in the playground. Year 4 will complete their workout on Monday 8th October due to their visit to Fishbourne Palace. They will have to complete a number of workout stations as they go round as a class to complete the circuit.
Children are aiming to collect as many sponsors as possible. We are looking to see who can collect the most sponsors, not necessarily the most money. All the money raised will go to the NSPCC and we are sure that the children will all enjoy the event as well. Your child should have brought home their sponsorship form this week. Please use the NSPCC form to collect your sponsors and return it to school no later than Friday 11th October. Any money you can raise will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for all your support and encouragement with this event.
This term, parents from each year group are invited to come in to school to join your child’s Year Group Leader for an informal coffee afternoon. Held on Tuesday afternoons between now and half term, this will provide you with the opportunity to discuss any general aspect of the school or your child’s year group, in an informal setting. Year Group Leaders will also give a brief presentation about what new things your child has to look forward to this year and what topics and curriculum areas your child will cover in their new year group as well as telling you about the National Curriculum for English, Maths, Computing & Science that your child will follow this year. Parent Coffee Afternoons will be held from 2.15pm. We aim to finish by 2.55pm to allow parents to collect younger children from the infant school if necessary. Other parents are welcome to stay in school until 3.15pm and have another tea or coffee.
There is no need to confirm that you can attend, please just come along!

This week’s book is ‘I, Cosmo by Carlie Sorosiak and is from the Year 5 book list.
Remember to write a book review for a book you read and get your bookmark stamped by your teacher.
‘I, Cosmo,’ by Carlie Sorosiak is a heart-warming and bitter sweet tale of family life. Cosmo senses that something is going wrong with his family, he can see that his ‘human’ brother Max is struggling and he can hear the constant arguing between Mum and Dad. He knows he has to find a way to keep his family together as he can’t bear to be separated from Max. With nobody else seeming to have a plan, it’s up to Cosmo to find a way to stop his family disintegrating. And the fact that Cosmo is a Golden Retriever isn’t going to stop him from trying to save the day. But how can one dog make a difference when even the grown-ups can’t figure out a way through this pain and bitterness?
You can find your child's Battle of the Books suggested book list on our school website via the following link:
http://www.cheamcommon.org.uk/website/supporting_the_curriculum/331291
Here you will find most books listed, however we are continually updating and showcasing our recommended reads as new books are released.
Welcome to our weekly science bulletin. Here you will find interesting facts and activities all about science! Every week we will discuss a new topic and we will also be finding out what each year group have been learning about in their science lessons. If you complete the follow up activities or research the topics please present your findings to Miss Lane. Your work may even make onto our twitter page!
This term, Year Three have been learning all about animals and humans. We will be learning about the human skeleton as well as different types of animal skeletons.
An endoskeleton is formed on the inside of an animal's body, while an exoskeleton is formed on the outside of an animal's body. An endoskeleton is often made of cartilage and bone, while an exoskeleton is often made of chitin and proteins, or calcium carbonate. Have a look at the examples below.
Over to you!
What are the advantages of having an endoskeleton or exoskeleton? Would humans benefit from having an exoskeleton?
Don’t forget to present your findings to Miss Lane and Year Three!

NAS Sutton are really pleased to welcome Dr Alexandra Gregory, who is an Educational Psychologist and also a sibling of somebody with autism.
She is going to be running a half day workshop for both Parents and Siblings which will cover the following:
Parents and their children will remain in the same hall for the afternoon, although at times they may separate off into different groups.
Refreshments will be provided.
IMPORTANT: Please note that this workshop is only for Siblings and not for those kids with a diagnosis of Autism. This is to protect the siblings and give them a chance to speak openly and honestly about their feelings. We ask everyone to respect this. We are also limiting the age to those of 8 years and over on this occasion so that they are of a similar age group. If this workshop runs well we will run it again for the lower age range.
