World Book Day - Thursday 7th March
On Thursday 7th March, we will be celebrating World Book Day. As is tradition, we will be asking children to dress up as a book character in any way that they can imagine. There will be prizes for the best-dressed children (and teachers) in each year group.
Children can keep their eyes peeled for their class' book-themed door, which teachers are busily organising.
Additionally, children are invited to create a Book in a Box. The box can be any shape or size that you would like and should contain a story! You can see some incredible ideas below, including some of our past winners! The deadline is Friday 8th March.
CCJ Careers Fair: Wednesday 10th July (TBC)
In the Summer Term, we are interested in hosting 'Cheam Common Careers Fair' on Wednesday 10th July (TBC).
We would be interested in inviting parents into school to talk about their jobs and to answer questions from children about their jobs/careers. We would love to find a real mix of jobs and vocations amongst our community in order to show the children a wide variety of future careers out there. Additionally, if you know of someone with an exciting career who you believe would be interested, please state this in the extra details section.
We are still in the early stages of planning this event but we would like to gather interest to see whether the event is worth running. Once we have an idea of numbers, we would be able to start to work out logistics of how the event would work.
If you would be interested in taking part in this event, please fill out this Google Form. If there is extraordinary demand, we will confirm attendees nearer the time. If your plans change and you are no longer able to volunteer, please do not worry at all!

Our Book Wishlist
Children across the school wrote a wishlist of the different books that they would like to see in their library and their classrooms.
We have collated this wishes and have put together an Amazon Wish List, which can be found here. If parents and families wish, there are over a hundred books that children are desperate to read on the list and these can be ordered as a present to our school. Alternatively, if you notice a book on the list that your children no longer read, we are always grateful for any donations!
It has also been suggested by our children that, on a birthday, rather than bringing sweets in for their classmates, children choose a book on the list that they would like to donate to their class. This also falls in line with our commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles. On the order, there is an option to leave a message - you can specify which class the book is for. As ever, we recognise that money can be tight so please note that this is entirely optional. Any support is always appreciated.
Weekly School and Sporting News Stories
This week at Cheam Common:
🎻 Philoharmonic Performance: On Tuesday, Year 4 travelled to St Andrew's Church in North Cheam to watch part of the London Philharmonic Orchestra perform. It was an eye-opening experience and showed our children just how far their musical talents can go!
🏏 Chance to Shine Cricket: Every Tuesday until the end of term, children are getting the opportunity to take part in Surrey Cricket's Chance to Shine programme, as part of their Outdoor PE lessons.
🏛 Natural History Museum: On Wednesday, our Year 3 children travelled to South Kensington to visit the Natural History Museum. They took part in a 'Volcano and Earthquake' workshop and learnt more about natural disasters around the world.
⚽ Sutton United 6-a-side Tournament: On Thursday, our Year 6 Boys' Football A Team took part in Sutton United's 6-a-side tournament. The tournament was suspended halfway through due to the abysmal weather conditions but, up until that point, Cheam Common had won their three games 4-0, 3-0 and 5-0. Goals were scored by Rashad (5), Joseph (3), Roman (2), Omer (1) and Jake (1). We hope that the tournament can continue at a later date.
🏌🏽♀️ Year 3/4 Primary Golf Competition: Postponed due to bad weather.
🏏 Sutton Indoor Cricket Qualifiers: On Friday afternoon, we hosted the Sutton Indoor Cricket Qualifiers.
🚲 Year 4 and 5 Bikeability: All week, and next week, children in Year 4 and 5 have been taking part in bespoke cycling lessons with Kingston Borough's Bikeability programme. Whether it is growing in confidence and taking part in cycling drills, or learning to ride a bike from scratch, we have been so impressed with children's perseverance.
If you would like to share your child's achievements outside of school with us, we'd love to hear them! Please complete this short form to tell us all about it!
Annabel, Elspeth and Jemimah (Year 4 & 6)
Annabel, Elspeth and Jemimah took part in the Spirit of Dance Festival on 11th March. They worked extremely hard for months and we are so pleased to say they came first place in their category! Well done, girls!
Laura (Year 6)
Laura and her younger sister were invited to take part in some promotional filming for English Heritage this week.
The girls had a fantastic day at the Eltham Palace. The girls met presenter Esme Todd. They all met with an English Heritage historian Andrew who talked about the history of the palace.
Austen (Year 3)
Over the half term, Austen worked on a short video where he used chocolate to model the rock cycle and consolidate his learning in science.
You can check it out below. Well done, Austen!
Mahisha (Year 5)
Mahisha recently earned a certificate to celebrate her excellent work in fine art. Well done, Mahisha!

SEND & Inclusion Updates
Young Carers at Cheam Common
At Cheam Common Junior Academy, we hold a weekly small group session to support children across the school who fulfil the role of ‘Young Carer’ because they have a sibling or parent with serious health issues, special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).
We want to celebrate the important role our Young Carers play, but also recognise that they may face challenges and pressures not shared by the general school population.
The group meets during assembly time and is led by Mrs Hart.
If you would like your child to take part please complete this form.
If you have any questions about the group, please feel free to contact us at ccjsend@leoacademytrust.co.uk
Please click here to access the Local Authority's Ambitious for SEND parent newsletter to stay in touch with what is happening in the local area. Free cooking course
Bags of Taste focuses on helping individuals and families improve their long-term health and finances and build their resilience and confidence through our independently evaluated cooking course. Here is a link to our website:
We work across England, including multiple London boroughs, to target people who are struggling to make ends meet. These may be young people, families, single parents, pensioners, socially isolated people, people over reliant on ready meals and fast food, people with medical conditions or mental health issues. You can find the areas we cover here https://bagsoftaste.org/courses/.
We aim to change people’s mindset by providing a structured and supported 2 week programme. Many of our previous participants have saved around £1,060, which is something useful especially with the rising costs of living. Children have also enjoyed it and allowed them to try cooking and eating new foods.
We will arrange delivery of a FREE bag of ingredients for three delicious low cost meals (that make about 7 meals) to a referred family’s door and mentor them by WhatsApp or phone over a two week period while they cook the dishes in their own time.
