Cheam Common has been listed as one of the top 500 primary schools in England by The Sunday Times. The table was published on Sunday and identifies the highest-achieving primary and preparatory schools in the UK. We were delighted to have featured in this list in 2018 in 173rd place and are now extremely proud to have moved to 58th for 2019. Well done to the staff and pupils at Cheam Common Junior Academy.
Over the next few weeks, classes across the school will be working on a Design & Technology project to create a variety of Christmas crafts ready to sell to children and parents. After school, on Wednesday 11th December, parents and carers will be invited to purchase the crafts. Which class and year group will create the most successful business? How many products can we sell? How much money can we raise. Watch this space to find out what your class/year group will be creating!
Thank you to everyone who supported Children in Need last Friday. From our Pyjama Day and Cake Sale we raised £740.50 for this fabulous cause. Well done all! A special thank you to our School Council for organising and running our Cake Sale. The rain didn't stop them!
Our current Year 4 classes have their Steve McQueen photographs displayed in the exhibition at the Tate Modern. These will be on display until 3rd May. These photos were taken when these children were in Year 3 when they took part in this project.
Year 4 will be visiting the exhibition on Friday 10th January 2020.
If you want to visit this free exhibition before then, you won't find the location of our photographs on a public map and gallery staff will not hold or share information about where specific photographs are located due to safeguarding reasons.
Our photograph is located in Section 22.
The exhibition spans 24 sections that are marked clockwise from the entrance.
Please note that in some instances the photographs might span across two sections, if they appear at the end of one line, so please look to the next section if you don’t see them banked together.
The gallery have requested that you are mindful of sharing the location of our photos on social media for safeguarding reasons.
We hope you enjoy the exhibition if you decide to go - we can't wait to see our photos as part of the exhibition in January!
Lucas in Year 5 had an exciting day on Tuesday taking part in the London Youth Games Wheelchair Festival at the National Tennis Centre. This great event encouraged young people of all abilities to come and learn new skills. Lucas attended inspiring sessions led Para Olympians Heather and Cornelia who both hope to compete in Tokyo 2020. Lucas proudly showed his impressive medal to everyone in our celebration assembly today.
This week in Year 6, Miss Kelly's class have been learning how to multiply and divide decimals by 10, 100 & 1000 using decimal sliding lines. Great work everyone.
Year 5 have been exploring time during Maths this week. Why not ask them to share their learning with you this evening?
Year 3 have been enjoying planting some bulbs around the school grounds. Thank you to Hollie in 4SM for giving the school a planting kit from the Hubbub and Mayor of London Give It A Grow scheme. We are looking forward to seeing the results in spring.
Also at Forest School this week, the children have also been having a go at whittling sticks, using a potato peeler and learning how to remove the outer bark to see what is underneath. They also made some mud paint and made some wonderful pictures. Well done all!
Year 4 have been exploring why the Vikings invaded Britain this week. Their lesson was brought to life using our new immersive audio resources from Now Press Play. It was great to see the children so engaged with our curriculum through emotion, imagination & movement. Well done Year 4!

The Sustainable Transport Team is seeking to recruit Cycle Instructors in the Sutton area to deliver Bikeability, the national cycle training programme for children. As one of our professional trained instructors you could earn up to £420.16 per week to deliver our standard Bikeability courses involving 20 hours of contact with riders plus time for course administration and travel. Our Bikeability sessions are typically 10.00 - 12.00 and 13.00 - 15.00, plus travel time. All instructors must train on a 4-day National Standard Instructor course. It is an advantage if you already hold this qualification although not essential as training will be arranged for the right candidates.
So if you are a regular cyclist, have good road sense, are a good communicator and enjoy working outdoors, then this could be just the job for you. If appropriate you will receive further training in First Aid and Cycle Maintenance.
For an informal discussion about these positions please telephone Eric Chasseray, Sustainable Transport Officer on 020 8547 5826 or email eric.chasseray@kingston.gov.uk

Each week we put a brief synopsis of one of our Battle of the Books in the newsletter from a year group’s book list.
This week’s book is from the Year 6 book list and is ‘Point Blanc’ (Alex Rider) by Anthony Horowitz.
Investigations into the “accidental” deaths of two of the world's most powerful men have revealed just one link: both had a son attending Point Blanc Academy, a school for rebellious rich kids run by the sinister Dr Grief and set high in the French Alps. Armed with a new collection of gadgets, Alex must infiltrate the academy as a pupil and establish the truth about what is really happening there!
Remember to fill in a book review once you have read a book so that your teacher can stamp your bookmark!
You can find your child's Battle of the Books suggested book list on our school website via the following link:

Here you will find most books listed, however we are continually updating and showcasing our recommended reads as new books are released.
Welcome to our weekly science bulletin. Here you will find interesting facts and activities all about science! Every week we will discuss a new topic and we will also be finding out what each year group have been learning about in their science lessons. If you complete the follow up activities or research the topics please present your findings to Miss Lane. Your work may even make onto our twitter page!
Year 4’s Science topic this term is all about teeth and healthy eating. They will learn about digestion, the different types of teeth we have and will also get to explore predators and their prey! Year 4 will be carrying out experiments to test how harmful certain drinks can be to our teeth. We look forward to hearing from them. You can find out more and watch this video about the effects of fizzy drinks here https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/znrb4wx.
Here are some crazy facts about teeth;
Over to you! Can you research and find the answers to the following;
How many teeth do adults have?
How are our teeth different from animals?
How do we protect and care for our teeth?
Please present your findings to Miss Lane!

Fun fact...
Ingredients
200g butter, cubed
200g plain chocolate, broken into squares
200g light soft brown sugar
2 large eggs, beaten
1 tsp vanilla extract
250g self-raising flour
For the icing
200g plain chocolate, broken into squares
100ml double cream, not fridge-cold
50g icing sugar
For the reindeers
12 large milk chocolate buttons (we used Cadbury Dairy Milk Giant Buttons)
24 white chocolate buttons
12 red Smarties
black icing pens
mini pretzels, carefully cut in half horizontally
Method
Get started: Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. Line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cases. Gently melt the butter, chocolate, sugar and 100ml hot water together in a large saucepan, stirring occasionally. Set aside to cool a little while you weigh the other ingredients.
Make your cakes: Stir the eggs and vanilla into the chocolate mixture. Put the flour in a large mixing bowl, and stir in the chocolate mixture until smooth. Spoon into the cases until just over three-quarters full. Bake on a low shelf in the oven for 20-22 mins. Leave to cool.
Ice the tops: To make the icing, melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of barely simmering water. Once melted, turn off the heat, stir in the double cream, sift in the icing sugar and mix well. When spreadable, top each cake with some icing.
Have fun decorating: Position a milk chocolate button on top of each cake, then 2 white chocolate buttons above it. Use a little icing as glue to stick a red Smartie onto the milk chocolate button for a nose. Then use your icing pens to draw black dots on the white buttons for eyes. Stick 2 pretzel top halves into the top of each cake for antlers, and stick the bottom half of a pretzel under the Smartie for a mouth.
These cakes will keep in a sealed container for up to 3 days, but we doubt they’ll last that long!
