On Wednesday, to celebrate the success of the England Cricket Team at the 2019 World Cup, 40 children from Cheam Common joined hundreds of other children from across LEO for an afternoon of cricket activities with Surrey Cricket.
Their highlight of the afternoon was the arrival of the World Cup Cricket Trophy which the children were able to touch and have their photo taken with. This really was a once in a lifetime opportunity. We hope this has encouraged our budding cricketers to continue to play cricket through their time at Cheam Common and beyond.
Last year, Vasu in 4H was inspired to play cricket at school by Surrey Cricket Foundation and All Stars Cricket and last week was invited to the players' press conference at The Oval.
Vasu was able to meet, ask questions and get autographs from Joe Denly, Craig Overton and Sam Curran. She found out about their careers, received some tips for the game and found out some general facts about their likes/dislikes.
Vasu also had a tour of The Oval and then watched the England test team training for their last Ashes game.
What a fantastic experience for Vasu! We look forward to seeing how her love of the sport develops!
Ahead of the next Nature Valley Big Tennis Weekend on 28/9 & 29/9 with Sutton Tennis Academy, we are delighted to be offering tennis taster sessions to Y3 & Y4 on Friday 27th September. All children in Year 3 and 4 will have the opportunity to take part in a tennis session to develop their skills and hopefully find their love of tennis!
Children from across Year 4 took part in their session this week and had great fun as they practised their skills.
Our new Peer Mediators for this year have been selected. These children will work alongside Miss Bullen to help children across the school deal with any small conflicts and ensure everyone is having a happy playtime. They will also help run games and activities in classrooms during wet play.
Alex, Oscar, Navami, Maya, Leila, Amy VR, Lois F, Archie M, Alexander W, George, Haroon, Ava, Evie, Anjola, Freya, Paul, Ryan, Presley, Lula and Preston.
Well done to you all and good luck in your new role!
Thank you for your donations to our Harvest Festival Celebration today. Our School Councillors had a busy morning organising all of the groceries and produce into boxes ready to deliver to Sutton Foodbank on Tuesday 24th September.
This term, parents from each year group are invited to come in to school to join your child’s Year Group Leader for an informal coffee afternoon. Held on Tuesday afternoons between now and half term, this will provide you with the opportunity to discuss any general aspect of the school or your child’s year group, in an informal setting. Year Group Leaders will also give a brief presentation about what new things your child has to look forward to this year and what topics and curriculum areas your child will cover in their new year group as well as telling you about the National Curriculum for English, Maths, Computing & Science that your child will follow this year. Parent Coffee Afternoons will be held from 2.15pm. We aim to finish by 2.55pm to allow parents to collect younger children from the infant school if necessary. Other parents are welcome to stay in school until 3.15pm and have another tea or coffee.
There is no need to confirm that you can attend, please just come along!
Year 4 – Tuesday 24th September. Focus: Y4 Curriculum
Year 3 – Tuesday 1st October. Focus: Y3 Curriculum & a visit to your child’s classroom.
(Year 3 parents & grandparents are both very welcome on Tuesday 1st October.)

Welcome to our weekly science bulletin. Here you will find interesting facts and activities all about science! Every week we will discuss a new topic and we will also be finding out what each year group have been learning about in their science lessons. If you complete the follow up activities or research the topics please present your findings to Miss Lane. Your work may even make onto our twitter page!
The rock raft that was discovered is the same size as 20,000 football fields and was found by chance by Australian sailors. Scientists think the rock raft came from and underwater volcano near Tonga, which erupted last month. The volcanic rock is called ‘pumice stone’ and is very lightweight, meaning that it can float on water. Pumice is made when magma from a volcano cools really quickly in water.
Scientists report that the rock raft is made up of trillions of pieces of pumice stone, so it looks like a floating island when they’re all together. Experts think the pumice will be good for the environment, providing homes for ocean creatures and even by helping restore the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
Over to you!
Do you know how volcanoes work? What makes them erupt? Why can they be dangerous?
Don’t forget to present your findings to Miss Lane!
