CHILDREN MAKE GREAT PROGRESS AT CHEAM COMMON
This month, the Department for Education shared validated attainment and progress data for all schools in England. As you can see from the tables below, children at Cheam Common once again made great progress in 2019. We are very proud to see our children amongst the top 3% of all schools nationally for reading, writing and maths. Our children also far exceeded both the national and Sutton averages for attainment – at both the expected standard and the higher standard in 2019.
XMA CHROMEBOOK EXPERIENCE
Last week, Year 4 children from across the trust were in for a treat when they visited the XMA factory in St Albans to prepare them for their new chromebooks. The tour started in a private meeting room with surfboards for tables and bean bags for chairs! We then listened to a little about the history of chromebooks and found out they were only invented 8 years ago! We then went into the factory and watched technicians hardwire motherboards to create computers. It was amazing seeing all of the computer parts stacked up high! We even got to see our very own box of chromebooks. After the factory tour, we were allowed to help 'enroll' new chromebooks to set them up. Finally, we had another talk from a young man called Barnaby who explained how useful chromebooks are in school.
1:1 CHROMEBOOKS ARRIVE AT CHEAM COMMON!
The excitement continued this week when the chromebooks were delivered to Cheam Common. Our enthusiastic helpers unpacked the boxes and cases and children in Year 4 and 5 are excited to take them home today to practise using them over half term .
NITTO ATP FINALS
We are delighted to have secured 30 tickets for our Year 5 and 6 Sports' Leaders to go to the Nitto ATP Tennis Finals at The O2 on Tuesday 12th November. The finals are the season-ending event for the highest-ranked singles players and doubles teams.
More information to follow.
ENGLAND v GERMANY
Our Girls' Football team and 15 lucky children from our ballot will be watching the Lionesses play Germany at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 9th November.
DANONE NATIONAL CUP
On Thursday morning, our Year 5 & 6 Girls' 7-a-side squad headed over to Cheam Park Farm who hosted the Sutton Borough Finals of the Danone National Cup!
The girls' first match was against the eventual winners Cheam Park Farm where we unfortunately lost 1-0, although with the last kick of the game Isla M almost made it level with a shot that just edged past the post!
In our second game we faced Dorchester where they took an early lead. Adele performed a great save in goal from a long range shot but unfortunately couldn’t do anything with the rebound! Cheam Common answered straight back with a surging run down the left from Evie who crossed the ball into Ava who was them pulled down in the box and a penalty was given. Cheam Common Captain, Aniya, secured a draw with a well taken penalty. 1-1!
We were then into our 3rd game of the day where we faced the strong Barrow Hedges side and the winners of last years' tournament. It was a cracking game of football, 10 minutes end to end and hardly anything between the two sides with some great chances from Amy and Isla for Cheam Common before Evie fired home from just inside the box with a couple of minutes to go! 1-0 Cheam Common!
Onto our final game of the tournament where we faced Robin Hood. Aniya, after a couple of minutes, fired us into the lead from a great strike from outside the box! Our second goal was a fantastic team goal which came from an Adele goal kick which was played to Aniya who then found a pass to Melissa who found Evie in space down the wing who then played into Ava who set it back to Evie to shoot and score! 2-0 Cheam Common!
A fantastic tournament where the girls showed excellence and determination to finish in 2nd place overall. A big congratulations to Cheam Park Farm who won the Sutton Finals and will go on to represent Sutton in the Surrey Finals!

Geography - why is it so important?
Do you know the continents and oceans?
Having this fundamental knowledge allows children to explore and understand the world, providing a stage for current or historical events that have, or are taking place. It enables them to become global citizens who understand how we are connected through location, movement, climate, religion, trade and much much more.
Could you use imagery to name and locate the continents?
Which continent looks like a horse drinking water?
Which continent looks like a PlayStation controller?
Which continent looks like someone proudly holding their head high?
Can you think of any more?
How you can help at home?
Look at a globe or a map and discuss different places you have visited or events taking place around the world.
Your turn!
Choose a natural feature of the world (mountains, rivers, forests, beaches) and research where some important examples are found.
- What is special or impressive about them?
- Can you produce a guide?
- Can you use one as a setting for a short story or poem?
- Be sure to bring in your work!
SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
Thank you to everyone for supporting our Scholastic Book Fair this week. The money raised earns rewards for the school which will be used to buy additional books for our classroom libraries and lessons.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS
Each week we put a brief synopsis of one of our Battle of the Books in the newsletter from a year group’s book list.
This week’s book is one of the new titles from the Year 6 book list and is ‘Point Blanc’ (Alex Rider) by Anthony Horowitz.
Investigations into the “accidental” deaths of two of the world's most powerful men have revealed just one link: both had a son attending Point Blanc Academy, a school for rebellious rich kids run by the sinister Dr Grief and set high in the French Alps. Armed with a new collection of gadgets, Alex must infiltrate the academy as a pupil and establish the truth about what is really happening there!
Remember to fill in a book review once you have read a book so that your teacher can stamp your bookmark.
You can find your child's Battle of the Books suggested book list on our school website via the following link:
http://www.cheamcommon.org.uk/website/supporting_the_curriculum/331291
Here you will find most books listed, however we are continually updating and showcasing our recommended reads as new books are released.
MAD ABOUT MATHS
Welcome to our weekly science bulletin. Here you will find interesting facts and activities all about science! Every week we will discuss a new topic and we will also be finding out what each year group have been learning about in their science lessons. If you complete the follow up activities or research the topics please present your findings to Miss Lane. Your work may even make onto our twitter page!
This week...stars!
Stars are giant spheres of superhot gas made up mostly of hydrogen and helium. Stars get so hot by burning hydrogen into helium in a process called nuclear fusion. This is what makes them so hot and bright. Our Sun is a star.
Fun facts about Stars
- Most of the stars in the universe are red dwarfs.
- They twinkle because of movement in the Earth's atmosphere.
- Many stars come in pairs called binary stars. There are some groupings with up to 4 stars.
- The smaller they are the longer they live. Giant stars are bright, but tend to burn out fast.
- The nearest star to Earth is Proxima Centauri. It is 4.2 light-years away, meaning you would have to travel at the speed of light for 4.2 years to get there.
- The Sun is around 4.5 billion years old.
Over to you! Who do you agree with in the picture below?
Don’t forget to present your findings to Miss Lane!

NAS Sutton Training for Professionals:
"Small Steps to Encourage Communication
in Children with SEND"
Tuesday 12 November
9.45am - 11.30am, Carshalton Beeches
If you work with children with SEND then this workshop is not to be missed...
The ability to share attention and to have the motivation or desire to communicate is vital for all aspects of learning and socialising, but some children with SEND can experience difficulties in achieving these valuable skills.
This workshop, written for professionals, will look at the fundamentals of early communication and how missing out on these early developmental stages can impact on children’s ability to interact and engage. Participants will gain a greater understanding of, and confidence in, using a variety of strategies to create a desire to communicate and develop shared attention. You should leave this workshop feeling more confident in using a small step approach to promote communication.
Suitable for Teachers, TA's, carers or childminders.
