Parent Survey

We want to learn more about how we can improve our school and LEO Academy Trust to improve parental engagement, so your time and honesty are much appreciated! This survey will ask questions about the communication between carers and school, confidence in the school’s strategy and other aspects.

It should take around 10 minutes to complete, and the survey must be completed in one sitting.

Summer Term Clubs

An email will be sent in the coming week including information on how to choose extra-curricular clubs that your child might like to join in the Summer Term. 

As we have done for the previous terms, parents will be asked to give first, second and third choices of clubs; these will be confirmed before the start of the Summer Term.

Digital Leaders: Design4SDGs

This week in assembly, the Digital Leaders shared their project, which was to design a solution for the Sustainable Development Goal - SDG3 Good Health and Wellbeing. They showcased APPhappy Apportunity Radio, which is their idea to promote a healthy and happy lifestyle by practising mindfuless, movement and incorporation music into their daily lives. They then asked everyone to complete a in questionnaire to find out if this is something that children are interested in and the potential impact. The project will be presented at the ExCel Centre in London, Bett education technology event at the end of March, where CCJ will pitch their idea against 12 other schools to compete for the most innovative and sustainable SDG solution. Thank you to all the pupils for participating in the assembly and for giving the Digital Leaders valuable market research to decide what next for APPhappy Radio. And, of course, a big thank you to the Digital Leaders for their time and dedication to the project. Fingers crossed for the finals!

Get set… we’re taking part in Sustran’s Big Walk and Wheel 2023 the UK’s largest inter-school cycling, walking, wheeling and scooting challenge. The challenge runs from this coming Monday for 2 weeks from 20-31 March. It’s free and we would love everyone to be involved.

What do you need to do?

Encourage your child(ren) to walk, use a wheelchair, scoot or cycle to school on as many days as possible during the event.

Including everyone

We want to make sure that everyone can get involved in Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel.

We know it may be more difficult for some pupils to take part than others. If you want to discuss more about your child(ren)’s specific needs, please contact Miss Shallcross and we will make sure to look into how your child(ren) can take part.

Why we are taking part

Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel is a great way to build physical activity in children’s daily routine which is important for their physical health and mental wellbeing.

Active school runs also help to reduce congestion and air pollution outside the school gate. A 2021 YouGov study showed nearly half of UK children worry about air pollution near their school. And that children thought active travel was the best way to bring down these pollution levels.

Plus there are some great prizes to be won every day if we get enough children taking part!

Bike Bus!

This would be a good opportunity to encourage more children to ride their bikes or go on their scooters to school during that week. The Bike Bus can be an opportunity for parents and children to ride together to school and, hopefully, an incentive to do it regularly.

On Friday 24th March, parents of Cheam Common Juniors are organising a Bike Bus to encourage more children to ride their bikes or go on their scooters to school during the Big Walk and Wheel. The Bike Bus can be an opportunity for parents and children to ride together to school and, hopefully, an incentive to do it regularly.

How it will work:

• The full route is 2.1 miles but riders can join at any point on the agreed route.

• There will be 3 "official" locations where people can wait for the Bike Bus.

1. Cheam. Start of Nonsuch bike path (8am)

2. Killester Gardens with Tudor Ave

3. Dalmeny Rd with Kingsmead Ave

• Parents have to go with their children and are responsible for them

• The chosen route is safe as it goes through Nonsuch Park and low traffic streets

Red Nose Day

Today, we have been celebrating Red Nose Day! There is still time to donate to our JustGiving page if you wish!

Orchestra Unwrapped

On Thursday, some of Year 5 children were lucky enough to attend the Orchestra Unwrapped Event at the Royal Festival Hall, in the Southbank Centre. This event gave the children an opportunity to see the Philharmonic Orchestra play live, and to learn more about classical music in an engaging and entertaining way!

Young Carers at Cheam Common

At Cheam Common Junior Academy, we hold a weekly small group session to support children across the school who fulfil the role of ‘Young Carer’ because they have a sibling or parent with serious health issues, special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).

We want to celebrate the important role our Young Carers play, but also recognise that they may face challenges and pressures not shared by the general school population.  

The group meets during assembly time and is led by Mrs Hart.

Support for ADHD and ASD

​Small Change, Big Difference - four week course (runs once a week on a Tuesday), starting Tuesday 28th February 2023 (In person event)

The aim is to empower parents, supporting them to help their children by developing an in-depth understanding of autism.  Taking a positive approach, we will explore, share and discuss practical strategies to help develop communication skills, pre-empt and manage behaviour and gain confidence and resilience.
