This week we were delighted to become a Google Reference School in recognition of our innovative use of Google For Education tools & their impact on learning in the classroom. We are looking forward to sharing our use of Technology for Learning & our 1:1 Chromebook Programme with schools across London & beyond.
They said: 'Cheam Common Junior Academy is doing exemplary things with Google tools and we’re excited for you to join this select group of Reference Schools.'
Being part of the Google Reference Schools program means that our use of G Suite throughout the school and our good practice in utilising its tools can be referenced and displayed to offer support to other schools. We are able to provide training opportunities for colleagues and will continue to work closely with Google in supporting the use, development and deployment of future technologies for use in schools. We are joining only 15 other schools from across the country as a Google Reference School.
Our goal is for all students to have access to technology within their lessons, and for it to be used to allow students to become confident and responsible users of modern technology, promoting communication, independence, resilience, collaboration and progress.
On Friday 10th January, Year 4 pupils set off on the train to visit TATE Britain in London. We were all very excited because unusually, we were going to visit a piece of artwork that included us! When we arrived, we met two members of staff who took us to a room to talk to us about the Steve McQueen exhibition and what we would expect to see when we got into the gallery. Finally, our photo was revealed on the big screen! It was very strange to see how much we had grown up in just one year since the photo was taken. After that, they took us into the exhibition to find the photo amongst all the other schools in London! We could not believe how many photos there were, they went from the floor all the way up to the ceiling and along a very large hall! Luckily, the man gave us a little hint of an area to find the photo in. It looked great! Exploring the gallery, we looked at some of the other pictures of schools and some classes only had 2 or 3 pupils! Imagine that! Before we went back to school, there was a little extra time so we had the chance to explore some of the other galleries in the TATE. It is definitely worth a visit. We had a lovely day!
On Friday 7th February, our PTA will be running a Disco for children across the school. Please make a note of this date in your diary.
Year 3 and 4: 3:30-5:00pm
Year 5 and 6: 5:30-7:00pm
Tickets will be £5 each. More details and how to purchase tickets will be shared next week.
Our Mandarin Club will be celebrating Chinese New Year on 22/1 in a Chinese Dance Workshop at Brookfield Primary. We’ll bring traditions of Chinese culture into our schools and will use a traditional Chinese dragon, parasols & fans to create an exciting dance for the children to perform. Watch this space!
Our Mandarin Club is now open to Year 4 students - if you would like your child to attend then please speak to the School Office.
Year 3 have been using the Christmas tree to make their own pencils. First they pulled off the pine needles, then using a potato peeler, they stripped the bark and made a point at one end. We then used ink to write our names.
Please remember to be respectful of our neighbours by driving and parking responsibly in the surrounding roads.
Your cooperation is appreciated.
If you have concerns about road safety outside school, please get in touch with Surrey County Council's Sustainable Transport Team via the county council's contact centre 03456 009 009.
Congratulations to our Year 5 Boys' for a 5-1 victory against Westbourne Primary School in the Sutton and Cheam Cup Quarter Finals. We will now play Cheam Park Farm or Dorchester Primary on 24th February in the semi finals. We wish you the best of the luck!
Match Report:
The game was incredibly close until one minute before half time where Harry W broke the deadlock with a great goal to put Cheam Common in the lead.
In the second half, Omari was straight off to make it 2:0 with a great pass coming from Harry L. Jay in quick succession made it 3-0 from a great pass by Omari.
Westbourne hit back to make it 3-1 with a great strike from their forward!
With a couple minutes to play Harry L picked the ball up in midfield and with a 25 yard strike found the top corner! 4-1!
Player of the match - Omari

Tiger Heart by Penny Chrimes
One magical friendship. One roaring adventure.
The magical tale of a bold young chimney sweep and a remarkable tiger, a dangerously hypnotic ruby and a mystical land found across an ocean and through a storm. Tiger Heart is an enchanting and enthralling adventure, with a heartwarming tale of friendship and loyalty perfect for fans of The Girl of Ink and Stars and Pax.
Fly, a young orphaned girl, never meant to end up in a cage with a man-eating tiger, yet after tumbling down a chimney flue, she soon comes face to face with the dangerous creature. And though she's sure she's no princess, when the tiger addresses her as 'your majesty', she can't help but vow to free him and return him home. But the bird-filled jungles and cloud-topped mountains of the tiger's homeland are an ocean away. And not everyone wants the tiger - or Fly - to get there alive.
With dark and dangerous forces working against them, will Fly be able to fulfil her promise and maybe - just maybe - become the queen her tiger knows her to be? Fans of ‘Running on the Roof of the World’ and ‘When the Mountains Roared’ are sure to be utterly delighted by this beautifully magical tale.
