News & Information

ENGLAND vs MONTENEGRO LIVE ACTION

Last night, 30 lucky children from our ballot headed to Wembley Stadium to watch England play in their 1000th international match in the Euro 2020 qualifiers. The children were in for an exciting game with England securing a 7:0 victory against Montenegro. They had a great evening waving their flags and cheering on the Three Lions and an impressive hat-trick from Harry Kane. Thank you to Miss Gunner, Miss Govier and Miss Brooks for taking the children to this memorable match.

CCJ TWEET FROM MARCUS RASHFORD

We were delighted that whilst on our journey home from Wembley Stadium, Marcus Rashford commented on our video of his goal to put England 4:0 up. By this morning, the video of Cheam Common cheering on the England team had been liked over 500 times and viewed nearly 40,000 times! What another fantastic opportunity for our children and a night to be remembered on England's 1000th international game! Click here to see the current number of likes and views of our Tweet!

YEAR 4 VIKING DAY

On Thursday, year 4 were very lucky to have a wonderful Viking Day. We started the day by dressing up as Vikings and coming to school. When we got there, we met a viking named Bjorn who told us all about how the Vikings came over to Britain and settled there. We spent lots of the morning playing games and looking at artefacts in small workshops. Our favourite was playing the chess game and looking at the swords!

After lunch, we had a great time playing stick wrestling, we discovered how heavy chain mail really was and we got the chance to look at some replicas of some viking shields. We finished the day with the battle of Hastings and we loved watching our teachers get defeated and tortured! 4S were the winners of the battle! We had such a great day and really didn't want it to end. Thank you to our teachers for organising this fantastic workshop to support our learning.

DIGITAL LEADERS PRESENT AT GOOGLE HEAD OFFICE

On Monday, six lucky Year 4 Digital Leaders were invited to Google Education's Head Office in Victoria to present to over 300 teachers, headteachers and governors from around the country about LEO's digital strategy and how it has impacted teaching and learning so far. When we arrived, we were offered an array of pastries and drinks! They were delicious! We were then shown the room that we were going to present in. It was a very big room and there were so many people! Mr Macaulay explained to all the people about our chromebook project and then handed over to us as we were the experts! We were a little nervous but we talked about what we could do with our chromebooks, what apps we had used and why it has been good to help us with our learning. After that, we had a break and then we were called back in for a panel meeting, where the audience were able to ask us any questions they wanted about the Chromebooks and how they were useful in school. We are hoping that now they will be introducing Chromebooks at their school soon! We had a lovely day at Google!

LIONESSES AT WEMBLEY

It was a rather wet and cold Saturday afternoon, that a group of children and staff from CCJ met at Morden underground station - we were off to watch the English Lionesses take on Germany at Wembley!

The journey itself was quite eventful as the trains were all very crowded and we had to get off one tube two stops before Wembley Park due to a fault! However we arrived at the stadium just in time. The walk to the stadium gave lots of opportunities for photographs and the excitement began to build. At last we found our seats, luckily under the roof, and watched the drama unfold. There were England flags tucked in every seat which we all used to full potential.

We had only been sat down for a few minutes when the opposition, Germany, scored; however the crowd were not deterred! Throughout the first half there was a lot of cheering and encouragement from the crowd and finally we were rewarded with a penalty to England. But it was not to be as the German keeper saved the ball with her foot. With almost the last kick of the first half, the Lionesses scored! The half ended 1-1!

The second half was just as exciting with both teams having several chances. We had decided to try and leave just before the end of the game to try and miss the crowds, so left the stadium at about 85 minutes only to hear later on the train that the German team score on the 90th minute to win the game 2-1!

Everyone who went had a great afternoon and enjoyed the whole event despite the loss. All the children who attended were a credit to the school.

RE:Code LONDON IMAGINATION LAB

Last Thursday, children from across Year 5 and 6 travelled to The Imagination Lab in London to take part in an exciting coding event. They were asked to take on a real life coding challenge. We listened to a speaker discuss the important issue of recycling and how it is a huge problem in London; we're one of the worst offenders in the UK! Then we were shown how to build a lego 'grabber' and program it using coding on an iPad. Once programmed, the grabber could pick up lego bricks and drop them in a different location. We were also shown how we could add extra features to our code, such as a sound effect. The fun really started when we were told about a competition to build a tower of bricks as high as we could. Always up for a challenge, our teams set about the task immediately and some managed to get up to 12 bricks! We were delighted to win water bottles for our efforts. All in all, it was a great day and has inspired us to carry on coding at home.

GIRLS' FOOTBALL ACTION

CCJ vs. MANOR PARK - League Match

We arrived at Sutton United for the next stage of our league table journey against Manor Park and were excited to get underway. We made an extremely strong start and went 2-0 up in the first five minutes, due to a penalty (expertly taken by Evie) and a debut goal for Ailah. We carried on strongly and had many more attacking opportunities. In the second half, we were unfortunate to let a goal in early and had to improve defensively throughout the rest of the game. Thankfully, Evie managed to make it 3-1 late in the game with a dribble along the entire pitch and a wonderful finish. Good luck to Manor Park for the rest of the season and congratulations to the girls!

CCJ vs. NONSUCH PRIMARY - Cup Match

We were incredibly excited for our first Borough Cup game of the season against Nonsuch Primary. Arriving at Sutton United in the freezing cold wasn't going to faze us! We had one of our strongest performances so far and our attacking ability was second-to-none. Evie managed to achieve Girl of the Game, scoring five incredible goals and leading the midfield well. Chloe scored her first goal for the school, with Ava adding another. The final score was 7-0 and takes us through to the Borough Cup Quarter Final, where we will be facing St Dunstan's or Brookfield.

YEAR 6 B TEAM MATCH DEBUT

On Thursday our Year B team had there first game of the season vs Manor Park. This was the first competitive game of football for the whole squad.

Cheam Common got off to a great start with shots from Presley and Evan hitting the post and one making the Manor Park goalkeeper pull off a great save!

Half Time 0-0.

Manor Park came out the strongest after the break and George pulled off two great saves for Cheam Common. Mati went down the other end and came close to scoring for Cheam Common.

With roughly 10 minutes to play Manor Park broke the deadlock from a corner 1-0.

Then with 2 minutes to play Manor Park doubled their lead from another corner 2-0.

The game was played in great spirit and was an excellent opportunity for the boys to build great social skills and team work. Well done to Manor Park on their 2-0 victory.

Player of the game: Mati

YEAR 3 & 4 LEO FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

Last Friday, we took part in the first LEO Tournament of the year at Brookfield Primary Academy.

Our first game was against Cheam Park Farm. We got off to a great start with Harry L scoring twice with two great, long range strikes assisted twice by Harry W. The game finished 2-0 to Cheam Common.

For our second game we faced Brookfield where Sam T broke into the Brookfield box from a great pass from Harry L which saw Sam T slot it home. Our second goal came from a great solo run from Harry W running down the line beating his defender to cut inside and fire home! 2-0!

Onto our next game vs Cheam Fields which got off to a slow start but we started to find our feet with some great combination play and Micheal played a great pass to Freddie who set up Harry L who fired into the top corner. 1-0!

Onto our final game vs Manor Park where a win or draw would guarantee Cheam Common to win the LEO Trust 3&4 Football Tournament! We went on to draw 0-0 against a very strong Manor Park side, and we were crowned winners of the tournament! Well done to all involved!

YEAR 3 & 4 RUGBY FESTIVAL

On the 6th of November, 2 intrepid teams from Year 3 and 4 went on a journey of discovery to play some of their first games of tag rugby! After arriving at the John Fisher playing fields, the teams were lucky enough to get a few targeted training sessions looking at very specific skills: short passes, defensive lines and attacking plays. This really helped in the second half of the day whereby they got to put their newly gained skills to the test in a series of games. We are happy to report that both teams won all of their games in some style. The 2 teams had a great day and look forward to their next games. Well done!

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

Each week we put a brief synopsis of one of our Battle of the Books in the newsletter from a year group’s book list.

This week’s book is one of the new titles from the Year 3 book list and is ‘Tilly and the Time Machine’ by Adrian Edmondson.

Tilly is seven and a half - and about to make history. When Tilly's dad builds a time machine in the shed, there's only one place she really wants to go: back to her sixth birthday party when she ate too many cupcakes and her mummy was still here. But then something goes wrong! Tilly's dad gets stuck in the past and only she can save him . . . Will they make it back in time for tea?

Remember to fill in a book review once you have read a book so that your teacher can stamp your bookmark!

You can find your child's Battle of the Books suggested book list on our school website via the following link:

Here you will find most books listed, however we are continually updating and showcasing our recommended reads as new books are released.

MAD ABOUT MATHS

Welcome to our weekly science bulletin. Here you will find interesting facts and activities all about science! Every week we will discuss a new topic and we will also be finding out what each year group have been learning about in their science lessons. If you complete the follow up activities or research the topics please present your findings to Miss Lane. Your work may even make onto our twitter page!

This week… light!

Year 3 are learning about light in science this term. We will be learning about light sources, reflection, shadows, how some light can be dangerous and how to protect our eyes. We recently carried out an investigation to find out which surfaces are better at reflecting light. We found that shiny, smooth surfaces were better reflectors than dull, bumpy surfaces. We really enjoyed investigating and making it a fair test.

Over to you!

Have a look at the concept cartoon above-who do you think is right?

How do you know?

Don’t forget to present your findings to Miss Lane!

Chocolate Truffles

INGREDIENTS

150g dark chocolate, chopped

150g milk chocolate, chopped

150ml double cream

50g unsalted butter

cocoa powder, sprinkles, lustre powder, icing sugar, chopped nuts, for coating

flavourless oil (such as sunflower), for shaping

METHOD

Put the dark and milk chocolate in a bowl, then put the cream and butter in a pan and bring to a simmer. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and stir until it melts. Leave to cool, then chill in the fridge for 7 hrs.

Put the coatings into separate bowls. To shape the truffles, lightly rub your hands with flavourless oil and roll teaspoons of the truffle mix between your palms – this can get messy!

Gently roll the truffles in the bowl until evenly coated, then put in a box and chill. Store in the fridge in an airtight container for three days, or freeze for up to a month. Defrost in the fridge overnight.
