It is a priority at Cheam Common to ensure that our pupils travel to school safely. The role of the Junior Travel Ambassadors (JTA’s) is to help to ensure that Road Safety remains a high profile. Our JTA’s are chosen because they are committed to sustainable transport and understand the need for children to be safe when travelling to school. Their responsibilities include assisting our Sutton Road Safety Officer when he comes into school to give termly road safety assemblies and to help with promotions and competitions. They also help to collect information and carry out surveys for the School Travel Plan. Thank you all for helping make the journey to and from Cheam Common each day as safe as it can be. Thank you to Mrs Judge for running the JTA scheme this year.

Children in our Eco Council will work with Mrs Harland to develop ideas on how to improve the places they learn and live it. This may be through recycling schemes, growing our own vegetables and this term focusing on the use of plastic.
On Friday 20th September the school will be holding our Harvest Festival celebrations. We kindly ask if you could support the children by sending in a variety of groceries and produce, which would be suitable as emergency produce and which have a relatively long shelf-life. Sutton Foodbank are particularly asking for donations of long-life or dried milk, tinned spaghetti, tinned rice pudding and packets of rice.
Year 3 will lead our celebration assembly this year, with Mrs Culver and our new School Council organising the distribution of the harvest donations.
Some of our new school councillors will be travelling with Mrs Culver to the Sutton Food Bank on Kimpton Road later in the month. The children will deliver our offerings, so that they can be accessed by those most at need in our community this autumn.
Thank you for your support.
Our School Photographer will be in school on Friday 20th September to take individual and sibling portrait photographs. Please ensure your child is in full school uniform.
If your child has a sibling at Cheam Common Infants,' and you would like them to have their photo taken together, please arrive at school for 8:00am. Due to previous high demand for this, we regret we cannot take any photos after 8:30am. If you are not in the queue by 8:15am we will be unable to take them.
We have a number of children with nut allergies in school. We kindly ask parents to ensure that no items or ingredients put in their children's lunch boxes contain nuts. Thank you for your support with this.
We would like to remind all parents who are eligible, to apply for the Pupil Premium Grant. This grant enables the school to provide additional support to our children where needed. Examples of this are, access to extra-curricular clubs and additional support with specific areas of the curriculum.
Any family in receipt of the grants listed below are eligible to apply for this grant, which is then allocated to our school.
If all parents who are eligible apply for Pupil Premium, it may result in the school receiving substantial funding which will be used for the benefit of the children, so please apply.
Applying for this grant is very simple, it can be done online at www.sutton.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals or you can telephone 0208 770 6953 and select the free school meal option. If you feel you would like support in applying for this grant please contact Miss Abram in the School Office, who will be happy to go through this process with you. All applications are confidential within the school.
This term, parents from each year group are invited to come in to school to join your child’s Year Group Leader for an informal coffee afternoon. Held on Tuesday afternoons between now and half term, this will provide you with the opportunity to discuss any general aspect of the school or your child’s year group, in an informal setting. Year Group Leaders will also give a brief presentation about what new things your child has to look forward to this year and what topics and curriculum areas your child will cover in their new year group as well as telling you about the National Curriculum for English, Maths, Computing & Science that your child will follow this year. Parent Coffee Afternoons will be held from 2.15pm. We aim to finish by 2.55pm to allow parents to collect younger children from the infant school if necessary. Other parents are welcome to stay in school until 3.15pm and have another tea or coffee.
There is no need to confirm that you can attend, please just come along!
Year 5 – Tuesday 17th September. Focus: Y5 Curriculum
Year 4 – Tuesday 24th September. Focus: Y4 Curriculum
Year 3 – Tuesday 1st October. Focus: Y3 Curriculum & a visit to your child’s classroom.
(Year 3 parents & grandparents are both very welcome on Tuesday 1st October.)
Please remember that all children are encouraged to bring fresh fruit or vegetables to school for a mid-morning snack during playtime. Many children are really hungry by lunchtime and will be happier and learn better if they have eaten something at playtime.
You can get all of the latest news and updates from Cheam Common by following us on Twitter. We use our Twitter account as the news feed of Cheam Common Junior. We also use Twitter to keep parents up to date with residential trips, sports and music news, year group trips and other areas of school life.
We are once again launching Battle of the Books with all year groups across the school. Each year group has over 50 books on their suggested reading list with recommendations of high quality stories and authors. There really is something for everyone! The aim is to get each child and each class reading as many books from the list as possible. By next week, every child will receive a book mark. Once your child has read one of the suggested books, they need to complete a book review from their class library and get their teacher to stamp their bookmark. At the end of each term, we will add up the total number of books read from each class. There will also be a prize for the child who reads the most books.
Each week we will also put a brief synopsis of one of the books from a year group’s book list in the newsletter.
This week’s book is ‘The Land of Roar' by Jenny McLachlan from the Year 5 book list.
When Arthur and Rose were little, they were heroes in the Land of Roar, an imaginary world that they found by climbing through the folding bed in their grandad's attic. Roar was filled with things they loved - dragons, mermaids, ninja wizards and adventure - as well as things that scared them, including a very creepy scarecrow! Now the twins are eleven, Roar is just a memory. But when they help Grandad clean out the attic, Arthur is horrified as Grandad is pulled into the folding bed and vanishes. Is he playing a joke? Or is Roar . . . real?
A wonderfully enchanted fantasy adventure, full of imagination, humour and heart, this wonderful new children’s book echoes classic tales gone before, such as Peter Pan, Jumaji and The Neverending Story. Readers can delight in this beautifully illustrated children’s book as they turn page after page, bringing to life a fantasy world full of dragons, unicorns, mermaids and more. A wonderful new addition and a captivating read, ‘The Land of Roar’ is sure to delight both small and ‘big’ kids alike!
Welcome to our weekly science bulletin. Here you will find interesting facts and activities all about science! Every week we will discuss a new topic and we will also be finding out what each year group have been learning about in their science lessons. If you complete the follow up activities or research the topics please present your findings to Miss Lane. Your work may even make onto our twitter page!
If you have spent any time observing seals at the zoo or in the wild, you may have seen the mammals swimming, walking, clapping, and even "barking" at one another. Now, scientists in Scotland have proved that with some vocal training, and the right incentive, the talented animals are also capable of mimicking the human language, accomplishing impressive tasks such as "singing" popular tunes like "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." The scientists in Scotland even hope to use similar training and teaching skills to help children and adults with speech difficulties in the future. Who knew we could learn so much from seals?!
Over to you!
Do you know of any other animals that can mimic or respond to speech? Are there other ways that animals communicate?
Don’t forget to present your findings to Miss Lane!
