School Updates

SATs Week

We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 children, who completed their SATs assessments this week. They have worked incredibly hard all year and we are so proud of their attitude, effort and hard work. We are looking forward to the rest of the term and there is plenty for them to be excited about. We hope they all have a restful weekend.

Class and team photos - Monday 15th and Friday 19th May

Our class and team photos are taking place on Monday 15th and Friday 19th May. We understand that there are various events taking place on both of these days, including Year 3 swimming. Please be reassured that the schedule has been created so that no child will miss their class photos.

Monday 15th May: Year 6 and team photos

Friday 19th May: Year 3, 4 and 5, and team photos.

Water bottles

As the weather is getting warmer, please ensure that your child is bringing a water bottle to school each day. On hotter days, they may require sunhats and suncream.

Our Wild Garden Volunteers - Thank you!

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers for helping complete the first phase of our wild garden transformation. On Wednesday afternoon, Sofie, Harry, Aadhya, Aaralyn, Kailey, Skyler, Laura, Remi and their families stayed behind to help turn over the soil and lay new compost on the flowerbeds. We cannot wait to keep you updated with our progress with the garden.

Omer's River Campaign

Omer (5M) has been researching and reading all about the current pollution crisis in British rivers and has taken it upon himself to help raise money for the Rivers Trust. If you would like to sponsor him (even £2), he would be incredibly grateful.

We are so proud of Omer for being dedicated to something that he is passionate about. Well done!

PE Uniform Consultation

We are currently in the process of considering phasing in a change to the existing PE uniform at Cheam Common Junior Academy. We have been busy re-designing with our current uniform providers. As such, we are asking for the opinions of the students, the school council, as well as parents and carers, as to whether they/you would like these changes to be introduced.

Games and PE are compulsory subjects under the National Curriculum and pupils should come to school equipped to take part in all lessons.

We believe our PE uniform should instil a sense of identity, pride and belonging at  Cheam Common Junior Academy, as well as ensuring our students are comfortable whilst maintaining high standards and consistency of the uniform when it is being worn.

As our students now come into school wearing their PE Kits at least twice a week, (sometimes more depending on clubs and sporting fixtures) we feel that this change would not only benefit the children in being proud and comfortable in their kits but also the parents in helping to keep the costs of purchasing uniform to a minimum. The PE kit would also be worn for day trips.

As a trust, we remain focused on sustainability and as such, the Friends at Cheam Common Academies will continue to offer a range of second hand uniforms.

The new PE Kit would comprise of a white t-shirt (logo optional), red shorts or black tracksuit bottoms. We would also be introducing a new, optional, lightweight sports’ top in black. A similar style tracksuit bottom may also be available.

These items would be available from Schoolwear Inc. Please also see our website for more information on uniform suppliers.

Please use the attached form to provide your feedback on the proposed new PE uniform by 26th May 2023.

Our Book Wishlist!

This week, with an idea formed by Sahanna (4F), children across the school wrote a wishlist of the different books that they would like to see in their library and their classrooms.

We have collated this wishes and have put together an Amazon Wish List, which can be found here. If parents and families wish, there are over a hundred books that children are desperate to read on the list and these can be ordered as a present to our school. Alternatively, if you notice a book on the list that your children no longer read, we are always grateful for any donations!

It has also been suggested by our children that, on a birthday, rather than bringing sweets in for their classmates, children choose a book on the list that they would like to donate to their class. This also falls in line with our commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles. On the order, there is an option to leave a message - you can specify which class the book is for. As ever, we recognise that money can be tight so please note that this is entirely optional. Any support is always appreciated.

Weekly School and Sporting News Stories

It was another busy week of events at Cheam Common!

🖊🖋 Pen Recycling: We have started to recycle all types of pen and glue stick in school. Logan created a fantastic sign for the Year 3 box.

🔢📕🖊 Year 6 SATs tests: Our Year 6 children have been working tirelessly this week to complete their SATs assessments in Grammar, Spelling, Reading and Maths. We are so proud of the hard work they have put in all year and hope they are looking forward to all of the exciting things that we have planned for the rest of the year.

🌻 Wild Garden: On Wednesday, we welcomed volunteers to help us start our transformation of our Wild Garden.

Year 5 Boys' Football Semi Final: On Wednesday, our Year 5 Boys' Football Team travelled to Brookfield to play the semi final of the Sutton and Cheam Cup. The game was against Nonsuch and it was incredibly tight. Eventually, Cheam Common came out 3-2 winners and will progress to the final later this month, when they will play St Cecilia's. Well done, boys!

Year 4/5 Boys' LEO Football Friendlies: On Thursday afternoon, some of our Year 4 and 5 boys took part in a friendly football tournament. It was the first time they had played together and we hope that they will have more time to play competitively throughout the rest of the term.

SEND & Inclusion Updates

Young Carers at Cheam Common

At Cheam Common Junior Academy, we hold a weekly small group session to support children across the school who fulfil the role of ‘Young Carer’ because they have a sibling or parent with serious health issues, special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).

We want to celebrate the important role our Young Carers play, but also recognise that they may face challenges and pressures not shared by the general school population.

The group meets during assembly time and is led by Mrs Hart.

If you would like your child to take part please complete this form.

If you have any questions about the group, please feel free to contact us at ccjsend@leoacademytrust.co.uk

‘Small Change, Big Difference’ Parent Group for parents of children with a diagnosis of autism.'

We are also looking to host another Small Change, Big Difference course with Adapt to Learn. For those that are unfamiliar with this course, we run this as an alternative to the Early Bird programme. Some information about this is below. If you are interested in attending this course, please email: sutton@nas.org.uk and we'll be in touch.

The aim is to empower parents, supporting them to help their children by developing an in-depth understanding of autism.  Taking a positive approach, we will explore, share and discuss practical strategies to help develop communication skills, pre-empt and manage behaviour and gain confidence and resilience.

During the sessions, parents will be given the opportunity to make connections, gain support and feel less isolated.

Each course comprises of four x 1.5-hour sessions and will cover a range of topics.
