On Friday, Year 4 visited Fishbourne Roman Palace in Chichester. We arrived at school at 7.30 and set off on the long coach journey to Chichester.
When we got there, we started by looking at some of the marvellous mosaics. There were hundreds, maybe even thousands of little tiles glued together to make many unique floors! All of the mosaics were over 2000 years old so it was amazing to see that some of them had survived! After that, we watched a short film all about the palace. What we saw on Friday was only half of what was originally there and it was already so huge! We had a look around the gardens, searching the different herbs and flowers that were used for medicines, perfume and in cooking. We pretended to be Rich Roman people being fed by slaves!
After lunch, we had our workshop. Our favourite part was where we got to pretend to be archaeologists and we had to investigate real Roman objects and try to figure out what each item was used for. Some of us then got to dress up as Rich Roman residents of the palace and some of us had to be slaves!
Once the workshop was over, it was time to return to school and to say goodbye to Fishbourne Roman Palace.
Thank you to our teachers for this great trip to reinforce the learning we have been doing in class. We are really enjoying this topic! We are looking forward to our next trip.
On Thursday afternoon Boris, Mati, Nico, Marcus H and Joshua K from Year 6 travelled to Cheam Fields to take part in the first LEO Badminton competition of the year!
There were three groups of five and each player competed in four matches to see who would finish at the top of their group to progress to the semi finals.
Joshua won 3 out 4 matches and finished second in his group!
Mati won 3 out 4 matches and finished second in his group! Mati was the best runner up and qualified for the semi finals! Mati was defeated in the semi finals vs the current Surrey County League Champion.
Marcus won 2 out 4 matches and finished third place in his group!
Nico won 2 out of 4 matches and finished third place in his group!
Boris won 4 out 4 matches and finished first place in his group and qualified for the semi finals where he had a tight 11-9 victory to march into the final to face the current Surrey County League Champion where he battled fantastically to win the whole LEO Trust Tournament 13-11! Congratulations Boris!
Well done to everyone who took part; great determination was shown. Thank you to Cheam Fields for hosting.
On Monday evening we travelled to Glyn School for the Year 4 Nomads' Korfball Championships. We had a great evening of sport!
We got off to a great start in the group winning our first game 5-0 vs Stanley Park B team which included a basket from every player Zeke, Vasu, Zac M and Elo.
In our second and last group qualifying game, we faced Nonsuch Primary where we won 3-0 which sent us through to the semi finals!
In the semi final we faced Stanley Park A where it ended 0-0 in our hardest, tightest game so far! Following a penalty shootout, we won 4-3 with Vasu, Elo, Zac M and Zeke all scoring their baskets to send us into the final!
We faced Cheam Park Farm in the final. It was a thrilling game, which saw a hat trick of baskets from Zeke, but we were unfortunately defeated 5-3.
Congratulations to our Year 4 Korfball Team; Runners Up at the Sutton Schools’ Championships! Also a big congratulations to Zeke who was voted by Nomads' Korfball Club as player of the tournament! Great efforts all evening from Vasu, Elo, Zeek and Zac M!
On Wednesday afternoon, our football team headed off to St Stephens in the first round of the Y6 Boys' Surrey Cup!
We got off to a great start and after two minutes, Luke T won the ball and found Omari who was able to cut across his defender to find the far bottom corner! 1-0!
Straight from a St Stephens' kick off, Eddie G and Bolu pressurised the St Stephens' defence to play a loose pass which Omari darted onto! 2-0 Cheam Common!
Following this, a long free kick by St Stephens saw it go straight in to make it 2-1.
Cheam Common reacted really well and from a great tackle to win the ball back, the ball was played to Zac P who sent a great pass to Bolu who found the top corner! 3-1!
St Stephens showed some excellent passing and their centre forward found the back of the net! 3-2!
Right on half time we extended our lead to two again with a header from Bolu. 4-2!
Half Time! 4-2
Straight after half time, St Stephens came fighting back with two long range shots to make the score level! 4-4!
Omari answered back with a great long strike to find the top corner! 5-4!
St Stephens managed to break through after a tackle and found the back of the net! 5-5!
St Stephens were really now on top and another great long range effort found the top corner! For the first time Cheam Common found themselves losing! 5-6
Cheam Common answered this setback in the best possible way, Zac P found Joesph M in a great space out wide and whipped in a great cross to Bolu to finish 6-6!
With the last seconds of the game Cheam Common got a penalty! Up steps Bolu but unfortunately the keeper pulls off a great save!
Full Time! 6-6
Extra Time started and St Stephens scored straight away with some great play down the right side! 6-7
With seconds to go of the second half of extra time, Eddie G found Bolu and with a wonderfully timed pass saw Bolu slot it home! 7-7!
Full Time of Extra Time!
Penalties!
A tense penalty shoot out saw three fantastic saves from Ben and a great penalty from Benji and Eddie to finally secure the victory and put Cheam Common through to the next round!
A huge congratulations to the boys who showed great determination against a very strong St Stephens' side in a well contested tie!
What is mental health?
Your mental health affects how you feel, think and act. It refers to your emotional, psychological and social wellbeing. Your mental health can change and fluctuate on a daily basis and over time, and can be affected by a range of factors.
Just as it’s important to look after your physical health, the same is true for your mental health. Your state of wellbeing affects how you cope with stress, relate to others, make choices, and play a part in your family, community, workplace and among your friends.
When children have good levels of wellbeing it helps them to:
When children look after their mental health and develop their coping skills it can help them to boost their resilience, self-esteem and confidence. It can also help them learn to settle themselves, feel calm, and engage positively with their education - which can, in turn, improve their academic attainment.
The facts about mental health and children
One in 10 primary school children aged five to 10 has an identifiable mental health condition – that’s around three children in every class! Among this age group, boys are twice as likely as girls to have a mental health problem.
The move to secondary school sees an increase in the number of children struggling, with one in seven children aged 11 to 16 having an identifiable mental health condition. However, during these teen years, boys and girls are equally likely to be affected.
While more than half of all mental health problems are established by the age of 14, the factors that can put a child more at risk of developing a mental health problem can often be identified much earlier. If a child who is at risk isn’t given early support, they may go on to develop a mental health problem.
Early intervention is key to giving young people the best start in life.
Please see below for some activities and tips to help you (and your children) br happier, more in control and able to cope better with life’s ups and downs.

This week’s book is ‘My Cousin is a Time Traveller' by David Solomons and is from the Year 4 book list.
Remember to write a book review for a book you read and get your bookmark stamped by your teacher.
My Cousin is a Time Traveller by David Solomons
My Cousin is a Time Traveller is the fifth instalment featuring David Solomon’s main protagonist, Luke, in another action-packed, laugh-out-loud adventures. Similar in style to his previous books, ‘My Brother Is a Superhero’, ‘My Evil Twin is a Super Villain’ and ‘My Gym Teacher is an Alien Overlord’, this latest instalment continues the trend of mixing comedy, action and heartfelt emotion as Luke puts his life at risk again to help those he holds so dear to him.
‘My Cousin is a Time Traveller’ quickly unfolds, when Luke is surprised to learn that his cousin is a time traveller. He is even more surprised when she tells him that the machines around him are becoming intelligent and he must help her stop them taking over the world. For Luke, such a perilous message could not come at a worse time: Zack, his older, geekier superhero of a brother, has decided to give up his superpowers and live life as a normal teenage nerd. So, Luke must swallow his irritation and rise to the challenge yet again ...

In the continuing battle to deal with the plastic in our lives, some old tech is making a comeback as people choose to reuse and recycle things more- and to cut waste. Using glass bottles, paper bags and bars of soap is becoming more popular.
One example that is making a comeback is doorstep milk deliveries in glass bottles. Back in the day, milk would be dropped on people’s doorsteps. It would be delivered in glass bottles, which people could leave on their doorsteps when the bottles were empty, to be collected and refilled, meaning the containers weren’t wasted. Recent reports show that dairy companies say there’s been a big growth in the number of people going back to glass bottles of milk.
Over to you!
Can you think of other ways of reducing and reusing packaging? You could design a poster with your ideas!
Don’t forget to present your findings to Miss Lane!
