School Updates
Big Walk and Wheel 2023
Get set… we’re taking part in Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel 2023 the UK’s largest inter-school cycling, walking, wheeling and scooting challenge. The challenge runs from 20-31 March. It’s free and we would love everyone to be involved.
What do you need to do?
Encourage your child(ren) to walk, use a wheelchair, scoot or cycle to school on as many days as possible during the event.
Including everyone
We want to make sure that everyone can get involved in Sustran's Big Walk and Wheel.
We know it may be more difficult for some pupils to take part than others. If you want to discuss more about your child(ren)’s specific needs, please contact Miss Shallcross and we will make sure to look into how your child(ren) can take part.
Why we are taking part
Sustran's Big Walk and Wheel is a great way to build physical activity in children’s daily routine which is important for their physical health and mental wellbeing.
Active school runs also help to reduce congestion and air pollution outside the school gate. A 2021 YouGov study showed nearly half of UK children worry about air pollution near their school. And that children thought active travel was the best way to bring down these pollution levels.
Plus there are some great prizes to be won every day if we get enough children taking part!
Useful resources
To help you prepare, Sustrans has developed a handy free guide to walking, cycling or scooting to school. It is packed with advice to help you have a hassle-free journey to school.
Download your free family guide using this link: https://www.sustrans.org.uk/sign-up-to-receive-your-free-school-run-guide/

Bike Bus!
This would be a good opportunity to encourage more children to ride their bikes or go on their scooters to school during that week. The Bike Bus can be an opportunity for parents and children to ride together to school and, hopefully, an incentive to do it regularly.
On Friday 24th March, parents of Cheam Common Juniors are organising a Bike Bus to encourage more children to ride their bikes or go on their scooters to school during the Big Walk and Wheel. The Bike Bus can be an opportunity for parents and children to ride together to school and, hopefully, an incentive to do it regularly.
How it will work:
The full route is 2.1 miles but riders can join at any point on the agreed route.
There will be 3 "official" locations where people can wait for the Bike Bus.
Cheam. Start of Nonsuch bike path (8am)
Killester Gardens with Tudor Ave
Dalmeny Rd with Kingsmead Ave
Parents have to go with their children and are responsible for them
The chosen route is safe as it goes through Nonsuch Park and low traffic streets
Red Nose Day
On Friday 17th March, we will be celebrating Red Nose Day! We are inviting children to wear their pyjamas (or something bright and fun if they'd rather!) to school on this day. Children can bring a £1 donation if they wish, or parents can donate to Comic Relief using our JustGiving page if that is easier.
Children can also buy the brand-new Red Nose if they'd like. Our School Council will be walking around classes selling these noses between Monday 13th - Friday 17th March. Red Noses are £2.50 each - children can bring in cash for this. There is a brand-new design this year; you can find out more about it here.
Tanzii TV x CCJ Workout
On Tuesday 7th March at 9am, Tanzii TV published their workout that they filmed at Cheam Common Junior Academy last month. Abbie and Seb (5G) were chosen due to their enthusiasm in Tanzii TV workout sessions in class and we're sure that you'll agree that they did a fantastic job. You can check out the workout here!
Young Voices - 'Proud' Charity Single
In January, we attended the Young Voices concert at the 02 Arena. One of the songs that the children practised and sang together was 'Proud', originally by Heather Smalls. This song is now being sold as a charity single, with all proceeds going to the children's mental health charity, Place2Be.
If you are interested in purchasing the charity single, please see the this link.

Artsmark Silver Award
We are proud to announce that we have been awarded the Silver Artsmark Awards this year!
Artsmark Celebration Week took place from 7th - 11th November with the aim of celebrating the importance of community in young people’s lives, and the role creativity can play in strengthening connections and wellbeing.
During this week, we asked all children to create a patch each for a patchwork quilt (see below), which helped us to achieve this prestigious award.

SEND & Inclusion Updates!
Young Carers at Cheam Common
At Cheam Common Junior Academy, we hold a weekly small group session to support children across the school who fulfil the role of ‘Young Carer’ because they have a sibling or parent with serious health issues, special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).
We want to celebrate the important role our Young Carers play, but also recognise that they may face challenges and pressures not shared by the general school population.
The group meets during assembly time and is led by Mrs Hart.
If you would like your child to take part please complete this form.
If you have any questions about the group, please feel free to contact us at ccjsend@leoacademytrust.co.uk
