Eid Mubarak to all our families celebrating Eid al-Adha this weekend. It was lovely to see some of our children wearing their celebratory outfits at school on Friday and sharing how they were going to celebrate this weekend.
Although the weather turned a bit this week, it didn't deter the reception children from their free-flow indoor and outdoor activities within their continuous provision. We are grateful to the Friends of Cheam Common for their generous contribution of a new canopy outside the Hedgehogs and Squirrels Classrooms. This ensures all reception children can enjoy the outdoor play areas regardless of the weather. Hopefully, it will serve more as a sun shelter than a rain shelter for the rest of the half term.
We are fortunate to have a supportive community, which allows us to continually improve the school and ensure an enriching learning journey for your children. I am excited to share that the Friends will soon announce plans for our new playground. The children contributed great ideas, and while some dreams (giant rainbow slides and a trampoline park) were not feasible due to health and safety restrictions, I hope they will be pleased with the finalised designs.
The traveling book fair will return on Tuesday, July 1st, in the main playground. Book prices start at £2.99, and there is a 3-for-2 offer. All book purchases help us resource the school library and book corners. For every book you purchase we earn rewards that can be spent in the scholastic shop. While we have many great books in school, I am always looking for non-fiction texts and new titles that celebrate our diverse and culturally rich community. My dream is that every child leaving Cheam Common feels they have read a book that reflects their own experiences, identities, and values, allowing them to see themselves in a story.
The national phonics screening check will be administered next week for all Year One students and select Year Two students. I am confident the children will excel. Results will be shared with parents on Friday, July 11th, along with the end-of-year reports. Please refrain from asking teachers about individual student performance before this date, as they are unable to disclose this information. The government will announce the pass mark on June 23rd. .
Next week is "My Money Week," a national initiative designed to engage children and young people aged 3-19 in financial matters. Financial education is already integrated into our curriculum; this week provides an extra opportunity to enhance students' financial awareness through age-appropriate activities.

Edurio Survey 2025
"I would love to see a "Heritage day", where all children could bring in items or make posters (for example) about things that they feel describes their roots. I think in that way children who come from very small minorities and probably are not on the inclusive celebrations list would have a chance to tell about their culture too."
On Friday, June 20th, Culture and Heritage Day, pupils will have the opportunity to share information about their culture or religion with their class, if they choose to do so. They may wish to create a poster or bring an item that represents their culture or religion. Each class will hold a cultural diversity "show and tell" session during the day. If parents would like to share a story or information about their culture with their child's class, please speak with the class teacher or email the office to arrange a time. We hope this will be a fun day for everyone to learn about the diverse cultures celebrated by Cheam Common families.

Reception places are filling up!
We have fewer than five places left for our Reception cohort for 2025. If you have any friends or family moving to the area or who need a place for September, please let them know! Our admissions team led by Mrs Meaney will be able to advise and provide all necessary information to anyone interested.
Tuesday 24th and Thursday 26th June
To support our science and geography learning, we have arranged a fantastic trip to RHS Wisley for the Year 2 children next half term. On this trip, the children will have the chance to explore the beautiful gardens and the Glasshouse to develop their understanding of how plants are adapted to grow in different conditions and climates. The children will be given the opportunity to go on a scavenger hunt and create artworks using natural objects. We anticipate that this trip will provide the children with an educational and enjoyable experience with the freedom to be fully immersed in nature for the day.
On Tuesday 24th June Eagles and Falcons will be visiting the gardens. Mrs Harris will lead the trip, accompanied by Miss Stansbie. On Thursday 26th June, Owls and Kestrels will be visiting the gardens, led by Mrs Harris and accompanied by Miss King and Miss Jung. We will leave school by coach at 9.00am and we will return to school by 3.00pm.
Please complete this form by Tuesday 17th June to confirm your children’s participation in the trip. We may also need some parent volunteers. If you are available on this date and would like to offer your help, please indicate this on the form. We will then contact you to confirm your help.
The cost of this trip is £20.00 and payment should be made via Arbor by Tuesday 17th June.
Click on the links below to read our curriculum newsletters. On these, you can find out the topics that your children will be learning about, as well as information about home learning, PE days and general reminders for their year group.
We are excited to announce that you can now log same-day absences for your children directly through the Parent Portal or Arbor App. Simply navigate to the Attendance section, click "Log Absence," and fill in the details. You can adjust the start and end times if it is not a full-day absence. Once submitted, school staff will review and either approve or reject the request. You will see approved absences in the Attendance tab.
Please note, this feature is only for same-day absences; for any extended or future absences, please continue to complete and submit the request for exceptional absence. We will also continue to use the same day absence google form. If you need to change an unapproved absence request, you will need to delete it and create a new one, as editing is not possible. Once an absence is approved, it cannot be deleted through the app, so you will need to contact the school for any further modifications.
This new reporting method will be used alongside our other established reporting procedures
Request for Exceptional Absence form in advance for future appointments and exception absence.
Cheam Common Infants' Absence Form for sickness and same day medical appointments.
Between Monday 23rd and Friday 27th June, we will be celebrating Maths Week London.
All children are invited to take part in our LEO-wide competition about famous historical mathematicians. You can choose from either Ada Lovelace or Albert Einstein, and complete an activity about their life.
There are activities for all ages, from Nursery to Year 6.
<-- See the poster here for more information about Ada Lovelace.

Reception have been reading The Naughty Bus and learning about London! They learnt the names of some famous London landmarks and wrote sentences about them. They also practised their counting skills by adding, then subtracting different amounts of passengers on a tens frame bus. They also pretended to take bus journeys on their model bus! They used play money to pay for their journeys.
Nursery have been reading The Knight Who Said No! They painted pictures of castles and drew the story setting and main characters. They also rescued the toy bears from the water to practise their special word from NELI: float!
Year One had a lovely first week back. The children have really enjoyed their new book “Pattan’s pumpkin” and have enjoyed exploring and learning about floods. They have written amazing stories using time adverbials. In maths the children have enjoyed learning about chronological order of their daily routine, also spelling the days of the week and months of the year.
Year One have begun their new learning about the difference between fruits and vegetables and whether they grow underground or above the ground. In PSHE the children explored life cycles and how they are changing from a baby to a child. In History they really enjoyed learning about monarchs and our British monarchy. They drew some lovely pictures of King Charles III.
Thank you for working with your child on their phonics during half term and completing the homework, we were very proud of them.
Year 2 has kicked off the new term with incredible energy and enthusiasm! They've dived headfirst into learning all about The Great Fire of London.
To understand the historical context, they became time detectives, researching fascinating facts and comparing life during the reigns of Charles II and Charles III. This helped them grasp the significant differences in daily life back then.
A real highlight was the Now Press Play Great Fire of London experience, where they virtually met Samuel Pepys and even accompanied him on a mission to see the King and try to stop the fire's spread – what an immersive way to learn history!
In English, the children have been busy sequencing the dramatic events of the fire, focusing on chronology by writing about the key dates and occurrences. Meanwhile, in Maths, they've been mastering the concepts of volume and practised measuring liquids.
PE has seen some impressive ball skills on display! The children have been expertly rolling and bouncing balls while safely moving around the hall, showcasing their improved coordination and control.
Finally, a huge thank you to The Friends of CCI and CCJ for organizing such a fantastic Year 2/Year 3 disco! The children had an absolutely brilliant time dancing and having fun.
Polite reminder...
As you know, we are a healthy school and therefore ask if your child would like to celebrate their birthday, they donate a book to a library instead of bringing treats. This also ensures there are no concerns over allergies.
Happy birthday! Thank you for your birthday book donation.
