The Year 6 children have continued to impress us with their maturity, focus, and enthusiasm over the past two weeks. They've tackled some complex new topics and displayed fantastic independence, especially during our recent assessments. We're incredibly proud of the hard work and positive attitudes they've shown across all subjects.ย
Inspired by the intriguing creatures in our class novel, Holes, the children have produced fantastic non-chronological reports focusing on their own invented species of lizard. They worked hard to integrate sophisticated and scientific vocabulary when describing their lizards' appearance, diet, habitat, and special features. The level of detail and research they put into these reports was exceptional!
Our focus in Maths has shifted to the world of decimals. The children have been busy developing their understanding of the relationship between fractions and decimals, practising converting between the two forms. They have also started applying their arithmetic skills to decimals, learning how to accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide these numbers. This is a crucial area of Year 6 maths, and they are progressing brilliantly.
We've continued our fascinating topic on light. This week, the children became expert investigators by conducting a fair test to explore how a shadow changes size. Specifically, they measured how a shadow changes as the distance between an object and a light source decreases. They meticulously recorded their results and drew clear scientific conclusions about the relationship between distance and shadow size.
Our study of global population and human movement has led to some incredibly thoughtful and sensitive conversations this fortnight. We discussed the complex reasons why people might choose to leave their country, exploring factors like conflict, climate, and opportunity. We also focused on the important distinction between migrants and refugees, helping the children develop a deeper and more nuanced understanding of global citizenship.
Our 'Come Dine With Me' project is off to a spectacular start! The children have shown great creativity in planning a three-course meal where each course features a specific star ingredient: peppers, salmon, or oranges. This week, they put on their aprons and cooked their starters. We were genuinely amazed by the variety of cuisines and the bold, delicious flavours they produced. We can't wait to see what they cook for their main courses and desserts over the coming weeks!
Last week, we had an incredibly exciting and educational visit to the Houses of Parliament! The children learned all about the workings of our UK government and even had the chance to meet our local MP, asking him thoughtful and engaging questions. This week, we built on that experience by celebrating UK Parliament Week. The children participated in a variety of activities to understand democracy and debate, culminating in a lively class debate about whether students should wear school uniforms. They developed excellent skills in presenting arguments and listening respectfully to opposing views.
Finally, we want to give a huge well done to all the children who completed a set of mock SATs assessments this week. They approached these tests with remarkable confidence, maturity, and focus. Taking these practice assessments is an important part of preparing for the end of the year, and they should all be very proud of how seriously they applied themselves.
