Year 2 have been exploring our school micro-habitats, creating pirate recipes and travelling into the past in our learning this fortnight.
We have explored the book Pirate Stew, which has inspired us to write our own recipes for Pirate Stew, a stew which if eaten turns you into a pirate. We have explored imperative (bossy) verbs to write our commands, adverbs to explain how we did our verbs and used adverbs of time to show order in our commands. We also thought about using the correct format for a recipe and including lists of ingredients and equipment as well as the method. Our recipes sounded truly revolting with ingredients such as slimy toads and rotten fish.
Reading
In Maths, we have been exploring addition and subtraction where the largest number is a multiple of ten and looking at the patterns we notice, e.g. if 8+2=10, I know 28+2 =30 and 48+2=50. We have also explored addition and subtraction calculations where the largest number isn't a multiple of 10 e.g. if I know 13-6=7 then I also know 33-6=27 and 63-6=57. We applied these to real life problems as well. We have also explored 1 more and 1 less of 2 digit numbers and 10 more and 10 less of 2 digit numbers and noticed the patterns we can see.
In Science, we have continued our topic on Microhabitats. We have been observing the changes that have been happening in our worm habitats and went on a mini beast hunt in the forest schools garden where we looked under the logs, in the grasses, in leaf litter and in the soil to count the number of mini beasts we could find. We found the most mini beasts under the logs. We have begun to plan an experiment to show if woodlice prefers damp or dry conditions.
We have continued our History topic, How was school different in the past? We have explored and researched what classrooms looked like beyond living memory. We sorted the features of the classroom according to when they were used. We also experienced our amazing Victorian Day. The children looked fantastic in their costumes and enjoyed taking part in a workshop that took them back in time to meet Queen Victoria and experience aspects of life from the workhouse to the fanciest of houses. In class, they experienced learning by rote, trying to work out imperial money and using Victorian script in their writing. Using chalk to record their ideas proved quite tricky. They also took part in a Victorian drill and learnt so much about this period of history.
DT
We have continued our topic , A Balanced Diet. We explored using the correct tools for preparing food. We chopped bananas with a knife, snipped coriander and parsley with scissors, grated cheese and spread hummous on wraps. We will use these skills when we make our healthy wraps later in the term.
