The miniaturization in microrobotics needs active and smart materials that can be shaped into structures meant to carry out simple actions, called actuators. To do so, one of the promising materials is Liquid Crystal Networks (LCN). These polymer structures are composed of mesogens that can react to light or temperature to induce a deformation. Using two photon polymerisation and stereolithography, simple actuators with integrated optical fiber are explored to enable microrobots to have an embedded actuator usable in vitro or in vivo.
