Hands reaching out to each other to help

Social care careers focus upon the provision of care, advice and support to vulnerable groups and individuals in the community that enables them to enjoy a more improved way of life.

Careers in health and social care are some of the most important in the world. These employees not only help people on an individual, family or community basis; but make a difference to society as a whole.

Social care is an especially broad career sector and many different career paths are available for people from all different kinds of academic backgrounds. Careers in social care are more likely to start with on-the-job training or volunteering, allowing people to work towards further qualifications as they develop their career. As long as you have solid English & Maths skills and a recent DBS certificate, you are ready to start planning your social care career, and as there are endless opportunities for FREE English & Maths up to level 2 available, absolutely everyone is in a place where they could consider if a career in social care could be right for them!

Remember, the key word to consider when contemplating a career in this sector is ‘care’, it is important that you truly care about helping other people and that you can understand how others might be feeling (empathy) in spite of your differences (age, gender, ethnicity, ability etc.). Without the ability to show levels of concern about peoples’ needs, a desire to make a difference and a belief in equality, it is impossible to succeed in the health and social care world.

You will also need to be able to build relationships, with patients and service users, their families, partners, other professionals from different service providers, so it is essential that people trust you, meaning patience, friendliness and fantastic communication skills are needed.

If social care tends to focus around managing or delivering support, and could be described as the heart, then social sciences might be best described as the brain. Social sciences explore different aspects of human society and helps people to understand things like political and economic systems, psychology, sociology, history and geography; the systems in which social care is needed and provided.

Social Science courses are ideal for people with a critical mind and a keen interest in how societies function, who then take what they have learnt, (normally at degree level), into careers where they use this information to advise and guide companies or individuals. Many stay in higher education and pursue an academic research or teaching career. Social services offer career opportunities in fields including, business, human resources (HR), law, criminology, counselling, welfare and social work professions amongst others, and many graduates progress to management grades or consultancy work
