Google Meet is the platform that we use to deliver our online sessions.
See below the sections included in this page:
Our classes are Google based, with Google Meet being embedded within Google Classroom, making it easier for learners and tutors to access it directly from one area instead of overwhelming you with multiple links.
Yes, this is safe and a compulsory step. If you do not install this plugin, you will not be seen or heard by the rest of the learners in the class
If your computer has a camera, then you will need to give your browser permission to access the camera. Please, be advised that Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer do not work well with Google Meet. We recommend using the Google Chrome browser. If you are using Google Chrome, you will have to allow your browser to access the camera and microphone. Once this is allowed, you will be able to see yourself on the screen. You can click on "join now" if your tutor is in the call.
The link for Google Meet only works during the time that has been pre-arranged with the tutor. You will not be able to access if the tutor is not in the call.
You do not have to use your camera if you don't want to. You can take part on the course without using your camera. When using your camera, make sure that you are aware of your surroundings, do not show anything that you don't want anyone to see! A video call for a lessons requires the same etiquette as going to the centre. You would not go to a class on your pyjamas!
To use Google Meet on your mobile device, you are required to install the app from the app store of your device. Once you complete this step, you can go back to the link and tap again on it, this will open the app and take you to the call. Remember, this link only works during the pre arranged times with the tutor.
You can participate even if your computer doesn't have a camera. You can interact with your class either with your voice if your computer has a microphone or just using the chat embedded in Google Meet. You can also use a phone or a tablet connected to your Wi-Fi as these devices have cameras and microphones.
You can find the App on your device's App store; you can also click on the link below for your device.
Google Meet is not compatible with Apple devices using any iOS under version 11.0 and with Android devices using a version older than Android 5.0 (Lollipop)
Participating in a video conference on your computer is quite demanding on your internet connection as your computer has to stream video and audio for each student connected to the class. This allows you to hear and see everyone in the call. An internet connection of at least 10 Mbps is required for basic quality video calls. If you want to test your internet speed, you can check it clicking on this link: https://fast.com/
A slow internet connection speed means:
video will freeze
internet connection struggles, causing you to disconnect from the call
audio will break up
If you are having issues like the ones mentioned above, please contact your internet provider.
You can see a very small version of what your camera is showing in the top right corner of the Google Meet window. If you want to see your camera alongside your learners' videos, you can do this by hovering over your camera's image (where it says 'you') and clicking on the tiles picture.
If you don't want to see your camera anymore, you can click on the 'remove this tile' button, your video will return to its original location.
You can improve the audio quality in your Google Meet calls if you use a headset or headphones. Most of the time, poor audio quality in any videoconferencing platform is produced due to audio return. This means that your microphone is capturing the sound coming out of your speakers, producing an echo. If you do not have a headset available, please mute yourself when you are not speaking to help improve the sound quality for the rest. Remember: your tutor can mute you but only you can unmute yourself.
