What is a mock jury/legal focus group?
A mock jury/legal focus group is a highly confidential research method used in the legal field to simulate a real jury trial and obtain feedback on a case from a group of individuals who are similar in characteristics to potential jurors. The purpose of a mock jury focus group is to gain insights into how real jurors might view a case and to identify strengths and weaknesses in the arguments and evidence presented.
A mock jury/focus group is selected to represent a cross-section of opinions to match the potential actual jury pool.Â
Individuals are compensated for their time for listening to a presentation of the case, which may include witness testimony, evidence, and legal arguments, much like a real trial or solicit opinions. After hearing the presentation, the participants are asked to deliberate or provide feedback on the information presented.
A survey collects the feedback obtained from a mock jury focus group and will be valuable for attorneys in several ways. For example, it will help attorneys identify which arguments and evidence are most persuasive and which may be less convincing to you as a juror. It can also help attorneys identify potential biases or misconceptions a juror may have and develop strategies to address them.
Put simply, a mock jury focus group is a useful tool for attorneys to gain insights into how potential jurors might view a case and develop effective trial strategies.
