Attendance and Punctuality
Question - I'm feeling unwell and therefore unable to attend today's lecture(s), how do I report my absence?
Answer - Firstly, we're sorry to hear you are feeling unwell. We do hope you feel better soon. Please contact the coaching tutor and the course tutor for the lectures you will miss before your first lecture. You can either email or contact a member of staff using Google Hangouts.
When contacting a tutor, please provide:
Your name
Student ID
Expected length of absence
Support requirements you may have.
Please do not ask another student to pass on this message as we normally provide an overview of the missed lecture so you are able to catch up on missed contents. Please know, all lectures will be made available via Google Classroom, it is your responsibility to read through the notes and jot down any questions you may have.
Question - I have a holiday booked in term time, how will this affect me?
Answer - We never encourage students to book/take holiday leave during term time as important content or assignment deadlines may be missed. However, we understand if you may have pre-booked holidays before contemplating studying at the University Centre Leeds. Obviously, we would like you to enjoy your holiday as we understand the positive impact holidays have on our students wellbeing. I would advise taking your laptop and learning materials and try to complete at least an hour of study everyday. The reason for this recommendation is that often students become very anxious during their holiday regarding their course. Small study periods may reduce these anxieties and allow you to enjoy your holiday. We recognise holidays as being 1-2 weeks long; any longer length of holiday is not advised, and we may recommend you to pause your studies. Equally, we also understand that our term times may be different from your childs/childrens term time. In this case, we ask that you plan your holiday around your study programme and try attend your 1.5 days and enjoy the rest. Please note, having a holiday does not constitute an extenuating or mitagating circumstance — you will not be given any additional time to submit work. You are allowed to submit work earlier, please communicate this with your module tutor.
Question - I may be late as I have to drop my children at school before my lesson, will I still be allowed to attend?
Answer - Punctuality is key, as it is for employment. We would like students to explore all options for childcare as many schools offer breakfast and afternoon clubs for working parents. Additionally, you can be awarded extra funding from the students loan company to help cover the cost of child care fees and allow you to study for the entire lecture. If all avenues have been explored, please communicate the earliest time you can attend your lecture and ask the tutor for additional work to complete independently so you do not not miss any vital contents.
Question - I need to leave my lesson early as I have an appointment, would this be allowed?
Answer - your health during your studies is important, and we understand that sometimes appointment times and dates can not be requested. As most students' study programmes are only 1.5 days per week, we believe there is ample time to be given an appointment outside of their study programme. Students who have recurring appointments need to discuss alternative dates/times, as missing many lectures will have a considerable impact on your learning. If you are unable to change your appointment, please contact the coaching tutor and the module tutor either in person and/or via Google Hangouts or email before the appointment. If possible, please attend as much of the lecture as you can.
Question - How many lessons do I need to attend to gain my qualification?
Answer - You need to complete all assignments to a minimum standard to be awarded your qualification. It is widely known that students with higher attendance achieve a higher classification for their degree. If a student falls below 80% attendance, a coaching tutor will arrange a tutorial to discuss your barriers to attending and help strategise ways to improve your ability to attend. We also recommended for students to attend every lecture and be punctual in doing so.
Assignment Submission
Question - Where do I submit my assignments?
Answer - Unless instructed otherwise, all assignments are submitted through a website called TurnitinUK. You will be shown how to use this system during your induction. Feel free to click on this link to access TurnitinUK
Question - I do not believe I am able to submit my assignment by the deadline, what happens now?
Answer - Please make every effort to submit your assignments by the deadline. It might be worth taking a quick 10 minute break, stretch your legs and grab a glass of water - You may be closer to finishing the assignment than you think. If, however, you still feel that you will not submit before the deadline, you have several options.
As per the late submission policy, you have 6 additional days to submit your assignment and incur a 10% grade deduction for every day you do not submit. For example, if your assignment was graded at a 70 but you submitted 3 days late, you will be awarded a 40. Please note that the assessor will not score lower than a 40, for example, if you score a 42 and submit 5 days late, the lowest grade you will receive is a 40.
If there is an exceptional circumstance for not submitting, you can either apply for a short extension or mitigation. More information can be found in your module handbook. Please note, short extension requests must be submitted to your tutor 24hrs before the deadline, whereas a mitigation claim can be submitted up to 5 days after the deadline.
Question - I have not submitted my work due to personal circumstances, please can you offer some guidance?
Answer - If there is an exceptional circumstance for not submitting, you can either apply for a short extension or mitigation. More information can be found in your module handbook. Please note, short extension requests must be submitted to your tutor 24hrs before the deadline, whereas a mitigation claim can be submitted up to 5 days after the deadline.
Question - How do I submit a e-presentation to TurnitinUK?
Answer - It is common for a tutor to request a student to record themselves conducting their presentation instead of presenting in person. We have a range of free software that can be used to record your presentation. We recommend using: Screencastify, Google Meet and/or Loom. Each application will allow you to present your slides and let you record your voice over them. Afterward, they all automatically download your recording into your Google Drive (If you sign in using your student account). Please visit the 'Digital support' section for further guidance on using E-recordings.
Fees and Finances
Question - The council has asked me to get a letter from my university to confirm that I am in full-time education. How can I get a copy of this letter?
Answer- all the information about a Council Tax Exemption letter is on our Financial Support page.
You’re a continuing student if you are:
moving on to the next year of your course
repeating a year of the same course or returning to a course after taking time out
transferring onto a new course from your old course
You should log in to your student finance account and apply online.
There’s a different process if you have studied for more than one year before and you’re going back to your studies after stopping your course because of personal reasons. This could be for things like if you were ill, pregnant, caring for someone or someone close to you died.
You should log in to your student finance account and apply online.
You must also send a letter explaining why you suspended your studies with supporting evidence.
The letter must include:
your customer reference number for student finance
an explanation of your situation and why you had to suspend your studies
Supporting evidence can include:
a letter from your doctor or social services on headed paper
a letter from your university or college on headed paper
copies of birth or death certificates
You might need to send more than one piece of evidence if it helps you to show why you stopped your course.
Use your online account to send the letter and evidence to Student Finance England, or send it by post.
