There is a difference between Point of View and Perspective.
• Point of view: who is telling the story, or part of a story – who is giving the information.
• Perspective: How a character feels about something – the character’s take on what happened based on attitude and beliefs
A Tale of Two Beasts, tells the same story from two different points of view: the little girl’s and the animal’s. The facts are the same but how each interpreted the facts are very different, based on their perspective.
Look at the event list below, these facts are a summary of the story, they tell what happened in the story. However, the point of view from which the story was told created two different stories. The character’s perspective caused them to interpret the facts very differently.
FACT: A little girl is walking in the woods and sees an animal hanging from a tree.
FACT: The little girl takes the animal.
FACT: The little girl wraps the animal in a scarf.
FACT: The little girl takes the animal home and cares for it.
FACT: The little girl shows him to her friends.
FACT: The little girl opens the window.
FACT: The animal leaves.
FACT: The animal comes back.
Looking at the facts, would the story be different if told from the perspective of Lord Rex? Discuss.
Enrichment:
Students can use the facts list to rewrite the story from beginning to end from the perspective of Lord Rex.
Students can create a comic strip telling the story from each character’s perspective.
