Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I get my child's elective changed?

A: We have changed the way we are doing electives this year. Electives are rotated each quarter, and everyone will rotate through all electives by 8th grade. The only exception is AVID, ESL, or Band/Orchestra - these are year long electives and require approval.

Q: My child is in advanced math and ELA last year, but not this year. Why?

A: Students are evaluated yearly on placement for the next school year. If a student had difficulties keeping up in the advanced class, he/she is placed back in regular ELA and math the following year. Students have a chance to return to advanced classes the next year by demonstrating excellence in the current class.

Q: How long do I have to get shot records and health records turned in?

A: Normally, families have 30 days to turn in documentation, this year it has been extended until October 30th.

Q: How many hours of online learning will my student be expected to complete each day?

A: Similar to a traditional classroom from 9:30a to 3:25p.

Q: How can I track my students' progress? How is academic feedback delivered to parents and students? How often?

A: Virtual students will be expected to keep the same pace as their on-site classmates and will receive feedback from daily assignments as the teacher grades and posts in PowerSchool. Any question a virtual student submits to their teacher by phone, email, or in a virtual conference will be answered in a timely manner, during the teacher's regular work hours or by special arrangement. Parents can keep track their child's progress through the parent portal in PowerSchool. If you need a parent portal login, please contact Mrs. Woodard at 919-776-8441.

Q: What's the plan for grading, attendance and testing?

A: Students are expected to attend online learning live classes according to the school schedule. Live teacher instruction is recorded, in case it is impossible for your student to attend the live class. If this is the case, you need to keep in close contact with your child's teacher by phone or email, and also explain the issue you are having. Each teacher will explain their grading policies. At this time, we do not know about standardized testing for this year.

Q: What are accommodations for students with special needs, or students learning English?

A: Students who have IEPs, 504s, and ELL plans will still have their plans followed through online learning.

Q: What kind of individual communication will my child receive?

A: School communication will occur through phone calls and emails. Students can easily email their teacher or counselor through school email, and we encourage this.
