Response to Intervention:
Response to Intervention, or RTI, is an educational program used at Valley View School to provide effective, high-quality instruction in a small group setting. The RTI program is designed to monitor all students' progress at the K-4 level, to ensure they are progressing as expected in the area of Language Arts. The RTI program provides additional support (intervention) to students who are struggling with literacy in the general education classroom.
Assessment & evaluation Process:
All students in grades kindergarten through fourth grade are given the Acadience Reading Assessment (formerly known as the DIBELS assessment), to monitor early literacy needs. Mrs. Neff administers this assessment to all students in grades K through four, three times each year. The assessment is given in September, January and May.
program information:
RTI may look different at each grade level, and at Valley View School, we have multiple programs in place to provide exactly what our students need each day. Some of our literacy programs include, but are not limited to:
The Wilson Fundations Program - The Wilson Fundations Program is a multi-sensory approach that serves as a foundational prevention program to help reduce reading and phonics struggles. It provides research-based instruction, and is used in our general education classrooms, as well as within our RTI program.
Wilson Reading System - The Wilson Reading System is an instructional program used to help struggling readers at a more intensive level. It’s one of several programs that uses the highly structured Orton–Gillingham approach.
Word Warm Ups Live - Word Warm Ups Live is a program within the Read Naturally Live Program. It provides repeated practice and a systematic review to reinforce phonemic awareness skills. This instruction is based on phonics, syllables, rhyming and letter patterns. It is leveled so that a student works exactly where they need to be to fill in individualized gaps when reading.
Read Naturally Live - Read Naturally Live is an online reading program that accelerates reading achievement by combining the research-based strategies of teacher modeling, repeated practice reading, and progress monitoring. A student works at his or her own pace, with an appropriate level of reading material. We use Read Naturally Live to enhance fluency practice in our second through fourth graders at Valley View School.
multi-tiered system of support:
The Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) is a framework to provide targeted and tiered interventions to students who are struggling to meet academic and behavioral standards. MTSS uses various screening and progress monitoring tools to determine if students are meeting the standards, and provides a tiered intensity to the levels of support, depending on student needs.
Tier 1 - Core Instruction with all students, within the general education classroom.
Tier 2 - In addition to Tier 1, small group instruction within the general education program. Students are referred to Tier 2 after documentation that they are struggling to respond to Tier 1.
Tier 3 - In addition to Tiers 1 and 2, Tier 3 includes small group instruction that is more frequent and more intensive within the general education program. Students are referred to Tier 3 after documentation that they have not responded accordingly to Tiers 1 and 2.
