Today we reviewed the steps of dividing fractions and then used our knowledge of dividing fractions and multiplying mixed numbers to write the steps of dividing mixed numbers.

Today we talked about more strategies to make multiplying rational numbers easier

  • changing the fractions to decimals or vice versa (ex multiply 1/8 x 1/4 instead of .125 x .25)
  • using the commutative and associative properties (with negatives) (ex. -9 x 5 x -1/3 x 4 x -1/2 group as -9 x -1/3 = 3 and 5 x 4 x -1/2 = -10 and 3 x -10 = -30)

Extra math we started dividing fractions and looked at the reasons dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal. We used pictures and patterns (see workbook page 35 - 36). We also used the strategy divide by 1

Today we continued multiplying fractions. We had a number talk about strategies to multiply fractions (switching the numerators or denominators). We applied our knowledge to change recipes to make larger servings.

November 14

Today we learned how to multiply mixed number and did different area problems. We also reviewed that multiplication means "of" and discussed that when you multiply by a fraction you will get a smaller answer.

November 13

Today we spoke about classifying numbers as rational and irrational.

We completed a chart in class and had a class discussion through which students had to defend if the number they picked was rational or not.

Homework

For homework students should complete the chart by deciding if each number is rational or not and deciding if it is a terminating, repeating or a non- repeating decimal. For example .25 is rational because it equals 1/4 and is a terminating decimal so it would go in the first box in the chart. The chart can be found on Google Classroom (2nd page of rational or irrational) or on the back of the classwork activity.

We continued comparing fractions and decimals (both positive and negative) and number lines.

2. Bring in a definition of "rational numbers"

3. Bring in or type up two recipes that you would want to make for Thanksgiving. Please make sure they include a serving size.

November 8

Today we started comparing fractions and decimals by placing them on a number line. We made a timeline of some of the events astronauts must complete before and after takeoff (see activity on Google Classroom).

November 6

Today we shared our notes and thoughts about the dance so we could better prepare for the Spring dance concession stand.

We also learned how to convert fractions into decimals (strategies: find an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100, simplify the fractions to help, divide the numerator by the denominator) and vice versa

Complete the "Convert the fractions to decimals and the decimals to fractions in simplest form" exercise on Google Classroom.

October 31 - Happy Halloween

Today in class we completed a Halloween Pixel Art Activity. Check Google Classroom for the activity. Students may complete this by Friday, November 3 at 7:30 am for extra credit. The assignment must be complete, accurate and turned in through Google Classroom to receive a HW pass. This is a great review of topics within this unit.

Today we reviewed perfect squares and square roots. We also reviewed geometric transformations and played a game on DESMOS. Lastly we set up our online textbook - feel free to login and check it out.

There is no Homework tonight but there will be a test on Friday on Graphing coordinate points, distance between points, finding perimeter and area of figures on a coordinate grid, and reflecting points and figures.

October 27

We continued our investigation into Perimeter and Area on a Coordinate Grid and went over the homework packet.

In extra math we were investigating which numbers make perfect squares. Find out if the following numbers are perfect squares by seeing if you can make a square with this area. If you can, write down the dimensions of the square.

The numbers are:

16, 18, 25, 35, 81, 120, 121, 225, 675

Today we went over the Number Theory Test, went over the distance homework and reviewed how to find perimeter and area. Students were given a packet with an exploratory challenge about applying the distance formula to perimeter and area. Students should continue working on this at home.

Students solved word problems using GCF and LCM (on Google Classroom). This should be finished for tomorrow. The graded homework is also due tomorrow (also on Google Classroom).

In class we learned 3 different strategies for finding the LCM.

In extra math we did a multiplication "number talk" and then reviewed the properties. I also started conferencing with students about their test/graded homework which I will finish tomorrow.

If students didn't finish the properties worksheet, they should finish it for homework. I will go over any questions tomorrow.

Today we reviewed mean. median, mode and range, and order of operations. Students should finish yesterday's worksheet for homework tonight. Students should make sure they have the homework worksheet and the worksheet from extra math for class tomorrow.

Today we talked about how multiplication and division of integers are related. We also explored averages and finding a missing number in a set of data when the average is known. Students are working on a project where they are analyzing temperature data from different cities and should use the averages of this data to determine where someone should chose to work. This project can be found on Google Classroom. We will finish it in class this week.

Students should complete the top half of the division of integers practice worksheet for homework (there is a joke about the cockroach on top)

CW: We expanded our development of our number system to include integers and spoke about the definition and examples of Integers.

HW: On a separate piece of paper, draw a picture that illustrates a real - life use of negative integers (it can just be simple sketch but I would be happy to hang some up in the room). Write a sentence or two that explains how negative numbers are used in your picture.

Sept. 13:

We continued comparing numbers in base 2, base 10, and base 60. There is no homework tonight.

Sept 12:

Today we started to develop the number system from natural numbers to whole numbers (0). We looked at the binary place value system.
