Social Studies
The following table shows possible course progression during high school.
Social 10 explores multiple perspectives on the origins of globalization and the local, national and international impacts of globalization on identity, lands, cultures, economies, human rights and quality of life. The concept explored in the course is globalization.
Social 20 explores the complexities of nationalism in Canadian and international contexts and includes study of the origins of nationalism and the influence of nationalism on regional, international and global relations. The concept explored in the course is nationalism.
Social 30 explores the origins and complexities of ideologies. Students will investigate, analyze and evaluate government policies and actions and develop individual and collective responses to contemporary local, national and global issues. The concept explored in the course is liberalism.
Both streams, at the 30 (Grade 12) level, will meet the Alberta High School Diploma requirements.
The -1 stream is an academic program designed for admittance into humanities and social sciences disciplines at the university level.
The -2 stream, while accepted at universities and other post-secondary institutions, is designed for students who will NOT be pursuing a humanities or social sciences university degree.
You must maintain a 70% or higher grade to move on to 20-1/AP and 30-1. You should have an 80% or higher to move on to 30-1AP.

Social Studies 10-4 K & E (5 credits)
(As recommended by Gr. 9 teacher/counselor)
This grade 10 course is from the Knowledge and Employability series of courses. The intent of K & E Social Studies is to provide students historical, political, and economic knowledge, critical thinking, and practical writing skills required to be a successful employee and Canadian and global citizen.
Social Studies 20-4 K & E (5 credits)
Prerequisite 50% in Social 10-4 or 40% in Social 10-2
This grade 11 course is from the Knowledge and Employability series of courses. Social 20-4 K & E is the final level of Social Studies required for the K & E certificate and is also a transition point for Social 20-2 in the high school diploma route.
Social Studies 10-AP (5 credits)
Grade Nine Social Studies (Recommend 75% or better)
Social Studies 10 AP is intended for students planning to register in the Advanced Placement Program. Social Studies 10AP will include all of the Alberta Social Studies 10-1 curriculum regarding the complexities of globalization, multiple perspectives on the origin of globalization and the local, national and international impacts of globalization. Social 10AP will also involve an emphasis on critical thinking and analytical skills necessary to be successful in the Advanced Placement Program.
Social Studies 20-1/20 AP (8 credits)
Pre-requisite: SOC 10-1 AP (Recommend 70% or better)
This course combines Alberta’s Social Studies 20-1 Program of Study with the Advanced Placement Program. Students will explore the complexities of nationalism in Canadian and international contexts. They will study the origins of nationalism and the influence of nationalism on regional, international, and global relations. The infusion of world history from multiple perspectives will allow students to develop understandings of nationalism and how nationalism contributes to the citizenship and identities of peoples in Canada. Critical and analytical skills are emphasized throughout Social Studies 20-1 AP.
Social Studies 30-1/AP (5 credits)
Prerequisite: SOC 20-1/AP (Recommend 70% or better for 30-1; 80% or better for 30-1 AP)
These courses combine the Alberta Learning Social Studies 30-1 Curriculum and the Advanced Placement Program History Curriculum. AP students will study the prescribed subject of World History complementing many of the topics in the Alberta Program of Studies. Students will complete an Advanced Placement exam in May and Alberta diploma exam in June.
