Students for whom English is not their first language can earn up to 15 extra credits in ESL Levels 2 through 4 as well as in the following courses offered at Father Lacombe High School: Students will also have access to Father Lacombe's ELL Learn Centre where they can receive additional support in their English language development.
ESL Introduction to Math 15—5 credits
ESL Introduction to Science 15—5 credits
ESL Introduction to Mathematics 15 (5 credits)
The goal of this course is to enable students to acquire academic language skills while mastering the key foundational mathematical ideas and basic Math content necessary for entry into grade-level mathematics classes. This course is appropriate for those English Language Learners who enter high school without the pre-requisite skills necessary for entry into Math 10 C or Math 10-3. Enrollment in this course will be based on teacher recommendations.
ESL Introduction to Science 15 (5 Credits)
This course addresses the conceptual and linguistic gaps that newcomer English Language Learners have when they enter high school. The course is designed to provide the necessary pre-requisite skills to assist the eventual integration into grade-level science classes.
English Language Learning Level 2- Developing (5 credits each)
Intended for students who have had little or no experience with English prior to arriving in Alberta Schools. These students require support in all areas of English language development with emphasis in oral development.
English Language Learning Level 3 - Expanding (5 credits)
Intended for students who have some competency in English and need a program focused specifically on language development for academic learning. There is a strong focus on reading and introductory writing.
English Language Learning Level 4 - Bridging (5 credits)
Intended for students who are able to succeed in most high school classes with consistent support in language development for academic learning. These students require continued support in reading with a strong emphasis on writing.
ESL 10 -Expository Writing
students will focus on developing editing skills as well as the development of sentence structure while teaching students the different types of expository writing. It is designed to meet the needs of ELL students to support student success when they transition into the mainstream English Language Arts courses. This course is only available to ESL Level 3 and 4 students. This class is recommended for ELL students levels 1 and 2.
ESL Reading Foundations 15 A
(5 credits)
In Reading Foundations 15 A, the students will study a wide range of texts and reading strategies required to be successful in their Senior High Courses. The goal of these courses is to help students develop an increased vocabulary in English and a wider range of reading strategies and skills. It is designed to meet the needs of ELL students who have not been exposed to a variety of print and visual texts in English.
ESL Reading Foundations 15 B
(5 credits)
After completing Reading Foundations 15 A, the students will continue to explore a wide range of texts and reading strategies required to be successful in their Senior High Courses. The goal is to help students increase thier vocabulary in English and become familiar with a wider range of reading strategies and skills.
ESL 15 Academic Achievement
(5 credits)
The primary goal of Academic Achievement through English Language
Development 15, is to provide English Language Learners (ELLs) with
the opportunity to build and extend academic language proficiency and overall communicative competence within all aspects of literacy (listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, representing) and across multiple subject areas.
