English Language Arts 10-1 (5 credits)
Recommended: Grade Nine Language Arts 75% or better
This course is intended for students who have demonstrated a high degree of skill in their use of language and in their understanding of print and non-print texts. Students who enroll in this course should have an interest in understanding and appreciating language and literature. They should enjoy reading independently and should be confident speakers and writers.
English Language Arts 10-2 (5 credits)
Students who enroll in this course will benefit from additional exposure to reading comprehension and writing strategies designed to strengthen their use of language and their understanding of texts. In addition, students will engage in the four arts of listening, speaking, viewing and representing.
K&E English Language Arts 10-4 (5 credits)
(As recommended by Gr. 9 teacher/counsellor)
In this course students engage in six language arts strands: reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and representing. Students build the foundational skills of communication and focus on developing the basic language competencies needed for everyday living at home, in the community, and the workplace.
This course is part of stream for a K&E Certificate of High School Achievement.
English Language Arts 20-1 (5 credits)
Prerequisite: ELA 10-1 (Recommended 70% or better) or ELA 10-1 Honours (if under 75%) or ELA 20-2 (80% or better)
This course is intended for students who have demonstrated proficiency in ELA 10-1 and display ability to analyze literature and to express their ideas confidently using a variety of forms. Particular emphasis will be placed on independent, inferential reading skills and the development of style in personal, critical, and creative activities involving writing, speaking, viewing, and representing.
English Language Arts 20-2 (5 credits)
Prerequisite: ELA 10-2 or ELA 10-1
This course is intended for students who have developed their language arts skills, but who would benefit from continued exposure to strategies designed to increase their skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and representing.
K & E English Language Arts 20-4 (5 credits)
Prerequisite: ELA 10-4 (Recommendation by Gr. 10 Counselor)
Students enrolled in this course will continue to be exposed to reading and writing strategies designed to strengthen their comprehension, their use of language, and their understanding of texts and content. The introduction of critical thinking skills will be administered at this level. Listening, speaking, viewing and representing skills are also developed within this course.
This course is a part of the stream for a K&E Certificate of High School Achievement.
English Language Arts 30-1 (5 credits)
Prerequisite: ELA 20-1 (Recommended 70% or better) or ELA 20-1 IB (Recommended if under 75%) or ELA 30-2 (80% or better)
This course is intended for students who continue to demonstrate proficiency in their ability to analyze literature and to express their ideas confidently using a variety of forms. Emphasis will be placed on the critical study of literature. ELA 30-1 is typically required for students who wish to pursue post-secondary studies.
English Language Arts 30-2 (5 credits)
Prerequisite: ELA 20-2 or ELA 20-1
This course focuses on demonstrating competencies in the language arts using a variety of texts and forms including visual reflection, literary exploration, and persuasive writing. ELA 30-2 may meet the requirements at some post-secondary institutions.
K & E English 30-4 (5 credits)
Prerequisite: ELA 20-4 or 20-2
Students enrolled in this course will continue to be exposed to reading and writing strategies designed to strengthen their comprehension, their use of language, and their understanding of texts and content. Critical thinking skills will be addressed along with preparation for post-graduation experiences such as interviews, applications, and letters. Listening, speaking, viewing and representing skills are also developed in this course.

ELA 10H (5 Credits)
Prerequisite: 75% or greater in ELA 9
ELA 10H is a Pre-AP class. This is a foundational course that prepares the students to be successful in ELA 20AP and 30AP. Successful students in this course are self-motivated and have a spark of curiosity to learn more about the complexities of literature.
Assessments are similar to a regular 10-1 class in order to assist in the transition from Grade 9 to Grade 10. Enrichment is offered in the 10H class through the selection of course material.
ELA 20-1 AP (5 Credits)
Prerequisite: 70% or greater in ELA 10H or ELA 10-1
ELA 20-1 AP is an introductory course to post-secondary English Literature Studies. Students will be introduced to the AP writing and reading requirements alongside those of the Alberta Education curriculum. The focus of this course is to have students practice their analysis skills on a variety of texts. Students will also be exposed to a range of British and American literature from different literary periods. Successful students are those who are self-motivated, excel both independently and within groups, and who are willing to actively participate in classroom discussions.
ELA 30-1 AP (5 Credits)
Prerequisite: 70% or greater in ELA 20-1 AP
ELA 30-1 AP is a course where students hone their reading and writing skills. This course provides a high standard curriculum in line with first year post-secondary literature classes. Students will be encouraged to read, analyze, and critique literature through multiple literary lenses, as a way to reinforce that the understanding of literature arises from multiple perspectives. A successful student will be one who is eager to learn about literature beyond simply reading it, a student who is inquisitive, self-motivated, and actively participates in classroom discussions.
By the end of this course, successful students will be ready to take the Alberta Education Diploma (Administered in January) and the AP Exam (Administered in May).
