Students in the Drama program at Father Lacombe High School will have the opportunity to experience, learn about, and produce theatre in this all-inclusive program. With a focus on dramatic skills, students will become versed in acting, improvisation, movement, scene work, monologues, mask development, play writing, directing, and technical aspects such as lighting, costumes and set design. The skills gained in the Drama class can be beneficial for many aspects of life. These include public speaking, displaying confidence, thinking on the spot, positive self-worth, and gaining an in-depth appreciation of the Theatre Arts. The courses below are skill based and enable students to feel supported on their road to discovery and learning.
Drama 10 (3 or 5 credits)
Recommended: No experience necessary
This course is an introduction to the stage and theatrical arts and may be a quarter or full semester class. This course includes an introduction to basic physical and vocal warm-up skills, emphasizes the study of movement including theatre conventions, improvisation, and physical theatre techniques. The overall purpose is to develop the student’s creative potential and to promote a positive self-image through the acquisition of theatre skills. In addition, this course will also include a technical theatre element such as set and/or costume design.
Drama 20 (5 credits)
Prerequisite: Drama 10
This course features advanced acting work with an emphasis on performing. Students also continue developing theatre skills through work in movement, contemporary and classic scene studies, monologues, soundscapes and playwriting. Students will begin to develop their own writer’s voice in the creation of their own plays and the focus will be on project work and performance studies.
Drama 30 (5 credits)
Prerequisite: Drama 20
This course features post-secondary preparation in acting and directing. There is a strong emphasis on self-directed work, generating projects, and ensemble performance. This course also includes continued study in technical theatre, playwriting, and performance to a larger audience. Students will continue to work professionally as a company with the opportunity to take leadership positions in stage direction. Solo and ensemble work is an expectation of this course.
Drama 10 and 20 ELL (3 credits)
Recommended: no experience necessary
This is a half semester course and is an introduction to the stage and theatrical arts that includes language acquisition. This course includes an introduction to basic physical and vocal warm-up skills, emphasizes the study of movement including theatre conventions, improvisation, and physical theatre techniques. The overall purpose is to develop the student’s creative potential and to promote a positive self-image through the acquisition of theatre skills and the English language through the theatre arts. In addition, this course will also include a technical theatre element such as set or costume design.
Yearly In-house Production, runs October- March – any student that goes to Father Lacombe can participate and audition for this yearly event. Rehearsals are held after school, and anyone interested is welcome. Recent plays include Breaking News, Property Rites, A Lighter Shade of Noir, She Kills Monsters and The Little Prince. This Spring we are presenting our first musical "Once On This Island", a touching story of love and community. (March 12, 13 & 14, 2025)
Father Lacombe Improv Club – Join Father Lacombe’s Improv club. This runs once a week and is student driven and directed. A great way to meet new friends, learn about Improv and laugh, a lot!
Calgary High School Drama Festival at University of Calgary – Father Lacombe Drama Students participate in our city’s Drama Festival. Small, student-directed works as well as mainstage shows can be presented. Workshops involve learning from many different professionals in the business. It is also a great way to meet other students with the same interests across the city.
Loose Moose Theater High School Improvisation Competition – Father Lacombe’s Improv team participates in this great non-competitive “competition”. It is a great way to challenge yourself, have loads of fun and see what other schools are doing.
Fine Arts Gala Performances – The Drama program here at Lacombe presents class work at the Fall and Winter Gala’s. This is an opportunity to show the community your hard work and is a chance to have a no-pressure performance opportunity. It is always a community gathering event that shares between all the Fine Arts here at Lacombe.
