Evidence of Effectiveness:
Quill's activities cover over 100 learning objectives aligned to Common Core language standards. For individual activities, Quill defines concept mastery as a student correctly applying the grammar concept they are practicing 80% of the time or more. Students typically spend 10-20 minutes on each activity. Quill defines broader success as a student writing and receiving feedback on 100 Quill sentences during the course of a school year. In writing 100 sentences, students typically master five to ten Common Core writing standards. During the 2018-19 school year so far, we have had 209,043 students, 14% of our students, complete at least 100 sentences; 25,724 of these students attended low-income schools. Quill offers a set of leveled Diagnostic assessments, as well as an ELL Diagnostic assessment. These assessments generate differentiated learning plans and recommended practice activities for each student based on their performance. When students complete all of the recommended activities, they are ready to move on to the next level of Diagnostic and Diagnostic recommendations. In 2017, WestEd, a nonprofit research and development agency, conducted a research study. Results suggest that students gained 18% in their writing skills from pre-test to post-test after using Quill for a month. To learn more, click the link below. Currently, we are engaged in 6 research projects with 13+ schools to determine how Quill impacts student writing overall. We are working with Dr. Michael Hebert at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to assess student work via the Test of Written Language.
Product Integration - Weekly Usage Recommendations:
Student Usage: 30 minutes per week
Student Progression: 2-4 independent activities per week, 1 lesson every 2-3 weeks
Teacher Engagement: Teachers will dedicate one class period every 2-3 weeks to providing an interactive instruction experience with Quill Lessons. Teachers will dedicate an additional 20-30 minutes each week for students to complete follow-up activities related to the lesson, and personalized activities recommended by the diagnostic. This time can be broken up in any way that works best for the teacher and the students.
