Students are assigned and take home 2 guided reading books home each week to practice. The more they read, the better reader they can become. If you would like for me to model how you can read with your child and prompts that will help them, please email me and set up a meeting.

Students need foundational skills before blending sounds together to read words. We learn to identify the uppercase & lowercase letters, then they are ready to learn the sounds that each letter make. Here are the videos we sing and dance to each day to help us remember our letters and sounds.

Once letter identification and letter sounds are fluent, we teach digraphs, vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, and dipthongs through movement and chants. Students pair movement and the chant for letter patterns beyond single-letter sounds learned in Kindergarten. Students are encouraged to look for these patterns in our books during their guided reading and independent reading. Students also use this knowledge to improve spelling in our writing.

Kindergarten & 1st Grade Sight Words
Sight words (also known as high-frequency words (HFW), heart words, or snap words) are the most commonly seen words in books. Most of the time, these words can not be sounded out traditionally so we memorize them to free up our brain capacity to tackle the words that need to be decoded.
The image below is an interactive way for your child to learn their sight words. First, click on the image which will bring up a page with all of the words. Each word is linked to its unique video that engages learners to remember the word in a creative and fun way. The first page includes all 25 kindergarten sight words and the other pages following are the last 75 sight words in 1st grade words. Once all words are fluently read in the context of books, move to the next pages until all 100 words are mastered.
Click on the sight word that our student needs to practice. Watch the video, then write the word in fun ways! (For example, rainbow-colored writing, bubble letters, block letters, dot letters, fancy writing, cursive, glitter pens, etc.)

Once all Kindergarten and 1st-grade sight words are learned, we move on to 100 more sight words in 2nd grade. The image below are the words taken from Leander ISD's list of sight words for 2nd grade.
