7th & 8th Grade Electives

AVID

What is AVID?

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills needed to be successful in their college & future careers, but it is the student’s determination that creates such success. AVID is NOT an intervention or remedial course; rather, it is a course to fast-track students to advanced courses and is especially beneficial for students who have not previously been in advanced courses.

In middle school, AVID is offered as an elective class in 7th and 8th grade and takes the place of a student's APS (Academic and Personal Success) class. All students at HMS are in one-two academic enrichment courses, which includes AVID, APS, or QUEST. While all students are exposed to AVID strategies at HMS, there are two sections of the AVID elective class for 7th grade and two sections for 8th grade.

AVID is...

  • a place for students that have the common goal of going to college
  • a class that begins preparing students to be college ready upon high school graduation
  • AVID combines rigor with support that includes each student's own individual determination and the support of teachers, other AVID students, family members, the AVID teacher(s), and college tutors
  • a place that sets high expectations for students including that they maintain at least grades of B or higher
  • a class that pushes kids to reach their potential own individual potential, regardless of how it compares to one another
  • a community of students that become more of a family that grow together
  • a privilege and honor to be a part of in our community

AVID is not...

  • NOT a one size fits all program; students in AVID have all been placed there for very different reasons
  • AVID is not an "at-risk" program. It is designed to support students, who would otherwise not attend a four-year university, to attend and graduate from a four-year school.
  • AVID is not for students who fail to complete any of their homework.
  • AVID is not for students who consistently receive grades of "D" or "F".
  • AVID is not for unmotivated students. They must have individual determination.
