Social Studies

Our social studies time is shared with science, so that we will have social studies for 4 weeks of each 9 week period. The exception to that will be our last nine weeks, when social studies will be combined with science and lessons will vary daily.

1st Nine Weeks - Communities and Freedom Week. Students will learn what it means to be a community, why we have communities and the roles people have in their community. During Freedom week, students will learn about the founding documents of the country (Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights.)

2nd Nine Weeks - Personal Financial Literacy and Business Finance. This will be an overview on money, saving, spending, taxes, and making good choices in finance. The business finance section will relate the roles of business to our work on communities and discuss supply and demand and scarcity.

3rd Nine Weeks - Government. What is government? Why do we have it? What are the levels of government? What do the various branches do? These questions and more will be the topics for our discussions.

4th Nine Weeks - Landforms and Geography. Maps, compasses, directions and landforms. Why did we build a city where we built Austin?
