Akin School Counseling Department
About the School Counseling Program
The mission of the Akin Elementary School Counseling program is to provide a comprehensive program, incorporating academic, career, personal and social development of all students. Through the counseling program, students will develop life-long leadership skills that empower them to soar to their fullest potential.
My services include classroom guidance lessons that teach skills in three domains as recommended by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) national standards: academic, career, and personal-social. I also work with students individually or in small groups to focus on problem-solving and student success. Another important role is meeting with parents and teachers to provide consultation or collaborative services for student planning. And last, but not least I am also the 504 coordinator and STAAR campus coordinator here at Akin!
Please feel free to let me know if I can be of any assistance to you or your child.
Access to School Counselor Services
School counselors serve students both in groups and individually to help students meet academic, personal/social, and college/career goals.
Individual referrals to the school counselor may be made by the student, a parent, or by school staff and administration. School counseling services do not constitute or substitute for professional therapeutic care.
Students may stop by the counseling office during the school day. Parents may call the counseling office to schedule an appointment or a phone conference. Matters of urgency will be given priority.
Counselors will respect a student's right to privacy unless (1) a parent/guardian requests information, (2) matters discussed pertain to possible harm to self or another person, (3) matters discussed pertain to any type of abuse, (4) there is a legal requirement for disclosure, or (5) there is a necessity to consult with other professionals.
