National Board Certification
Important updates for Candidates and Teachers Pursuing National Board Certification
South Carolina Department of Education
Educators holding a qualifying National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certificate will have their SC certificate’s current validity expiration to match the NBPTS expiration
•NBPTS certificates are issued for either 10 years or 5 years, resulting in some educators having a 10 year Professional certificate validity
•If educators renew their NBPTS certificate, their Professional validity is automatically updated so long as R2S and Jason Flatt do not apply
Procedures for a Renewed NBPTS
•CERRA alerts the SCDE automatically when NBPTS certificates are issued or renewed for SC public school educators
–Process occurs in December/January of each year
•NBPTS certificates are issued from Nov to Nov and don’t align with the school year
–Educators that are waiting for NBPTS renewal in November will receive a backdated Professional certificate once the NBPTS certificate is renewed
NBPTS Extension
The NBPTS is offering extensions to NBPTS issued certificates for the 2020-21 school year if educators held a 2010-2020 certificate and are having difficulty renewing due to current public health concerns
•NBPTS extensions do not affect SC Professional certificate validity
•NBPTS extensions do not qualify educators for state stipends / funding
Educator is not Renewing NBPTS
If the educator will not be renewing their NBPTS certificate, they must meet all Professional certificate renewal requirements
•Renewal window is the 5 years leading up to the Professional certificate’s expiration date
•EX: If a certificate is valid 2010-2020, the renewal credit window is summer 2015 to summer 2020

South Carolina Department of Education National Board Payment Guidelines
FY 20-21 Payment Guidelines for National Board Certified Teachers. Reference Proviso 1A.68 of the FY 20-21 General Appropriations Act.
The SC Legislature passed Proviso 1A.68. The following is provided for information concerning National Board Salary supplements:
The salary supplement continues at the $7,500 level for anyone who has been certified or completed the application process (as an initial candidate) prior to July 1, 2010.
Teachers who have applied prior to July 1, 2010 and are certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards shall enter a recertification cycle for their South Carolina certificate consistent with the recertification cycle for National Board Certification.
If a NB candidate waits until their 9th year to begin the renewal process, they could see a lapse in their NB supplement. Educators are encouraged to begin the renewal process in the 8th year.
If a person applies after July 1, 2010, and is certified by the National Board, they will receive a $5,000 salary supplement in the year of achieving certification, not to exceed the length of one national board certificate cycle.
No National Board loans will be processed or funding provided by the state of South Carolina.
The salary supplement shall be adjusted on a pro rata basis for the teacher’s FTE or days employed and paid to the teacher in accordance with the district’s payroll procedure.
NOTES:
Any teacher, who achieves certification, receives the full supplement to which they are entitled. Please note that in some cases the funding will expire before the paper certificate expires.
Teachers eligible to receive the state supplement upon achieving certification must have submitted the initial application and fee for NBPTS by June 30, 2018.
