How Do I Apply

NHS is not an organization that a student can sign up for. Students may become eligible at the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year during the first semester of their junior year or the first semester of their senior year...if they have a cumulative GPA of 3.50. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. *

*This process only applies to students who have been enrolled in the LCPS system for at least one semester.

Invitations to apply to the Heritage High School National Honor Society will be extended individually with all GPA eligible students receiving a hand-delivered letter (during the school day) by DATE HERE, (unless a student was absent...then they will receive their letter as soon as they return to school). A list of these eligible students will also be available in the main office.

The hand-delivered letter invites students to fill out an Application Packet and outlines the entire procedure for the selection process along with listing specific deadlines that apply to fillling out the Packet, writing the essay, and the requirements for continued participation and membership.

Once students receive their letter, they need to complete the downloadable Information Packet and essay (there is a word count). The packet link is above.

Since students cannot simply sign up for membership, it is mandatory to turn in a Student Information Packet and essay. The Packet and essay will be due on DATE HERE at 4:03 pm in the main office mailbox (Cloud) or in room 404. NO PACKETS OR ESSAYS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER 4:03 PM ON DATE HERE.

Students that apply are then selected to be members by a five-member Faculty Council. Not everyone that applies may get into NHS.

The Information Packet provides the Faculty Council with details about each candidate's leadership and service. The entire faculty of HHS is also surveyed for input on each applicants character. The Faculty Council then convenes to review all pertinent information. Candidates will be notified with a hand-delivered letter by DATE HERE (during the school day) regarding selection or non-selection.

Following notification of selection into the Heritage Pride NHS, a mandatory, formal induction ceremony will be held during the evening at Heritage High School in the auditorium for all new members and their parents/guardians, family, and friends. This date is scheduled for DATE HERE at 7:00 pm. (The snow date is DATE HERE.) New and current members are expected to attend the ceremony.

All newly accepted members need to be at school in the 300 hallway by 6:10 pm on the night of the induction and must also attend a mandatory practice/rehearsal a week earlier, TBA, in the auditorium. Current members need to be at school in the main hallway by 6:30 pm on the night of the induction.

After induction, members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all four criteria that led to their selection. This includes regular attendance at chapter meetings held on two or more Wednesday mornings a month during the school year and participation in HHS chapter service projects. These are selected by the chapter and require a ceratin number of hours to be completed per quarter. In order to remain an active and recognized member in good standing, a specific amount of points must be accumulated quarterly. These are acquired by participating in NHS related activities and events. If a member falls below the membership requirements as outlined in the letter in the information packet or the renewal agreement, they will be placed on probation with potential for eventual dismissal. Seniors must fulfill all requirements in order to walk with a sash.
