EE HPC WG: Water Management
Sustainably supporting science through committed community action
Sustainably supporting science through committed community action
Water requirements are increasing with computer system performance scaling, and water scarcity is an increasing problem in many areas. The EE HPC WG focus on energy efficiency is now broadened to include general issues of sustainability, such as water. The Water Management Team will initially focus on defining a scope and deliverable that leverages peer-to-peer exchange and possibly leads to collective action. The scope could include water quality, availability, access, storage, reuse, and conservation. Other topics that are related may include the impact of climate change on both wet and dry bulb temperature.

EE HPC WG 2023 Workshop
"Water Conservation in HPC" Moderator Suzy Belmont (NREL) with speakers Otto Van Geet (NREL), David Martinez (Sandia NL) and Tiziano Belotti (Swiss National Supercomputing Centre).
This session will focus on the efficient use of water within the context of climate change and a need for future resilience in our data centers. Speakers will touch on water efficiency, resilience planning, thermosyphons, and the use of alternative water sources. There will be a discussion of challenges, lessons learned, successes, and what to look for in the future when planning for water use in data centers. Recording and Presentations

"Los Alamos National Laboratory reclaimed water system and its use for their HPC data center" Tala and Chris Booten (LANL). LANL found a solution to eliminate the amount of potable water usage needed for cooling HPC facilities. The Sanitary Effluent Reclamation Facility enabled LANL to remove silica, reclaim effluent from the wastewater treatment plant and reduce the usage of potable water for HPC cooling.
