As workers re-enter Lab sites, health and safety will be the top priority. Returning workers will be asked to follow new guidelines. These include completing new training, social distancing, wearing face covers, cleaning work areas and surfaces, and performing self symptom checks. Most important, individuals who are experiencing symptoms will be asked to stay home and not come to a Lab site.
Safety culture at Berkeley Lab is more important now than ever before. Both teleworkers and those onsite need to be mindful of ergonomic safety. When at a Lab facility, please be aware and follow the COVID-19 restrictions to keep yourselves and others healthy. You also must remain vigilant about other aspects of safety and physical hazards. If you have been away from your worksite for an extended period of time, things that were second nature before may not be now. Take a moment to review safety protocols and procedures before beginning any work.
Any cloth covering that reliably covers the nose, mouth, and chin, includes multiple layers of fabric, is secured with straps or ear loops, and allows for breathing without restriction is an acceptable face covering. Note that face coverings are not PPE, which is still needed for any work activity that requires it.
For private cubicles/carrels, keep at least 12ft distance, please communicate with your peers on this front.
Conference Rooms are single occupancy spaces, so do not meet in person in these rooms.
If you need to go into a conference room or office to participate in a Zoom call or to remove your face cover for a while, please do that. Please use the 70% ethanol spray bottles provided around the facility to disinfect the surfaces of the space you enter, ideally before AND after use. Be sure to dispose of the wipes in the proper trash receptacle when you are finished
Ensure that at least 30 minutes have elapsed since the conference room or office was last used.
Conference rooms are not used for in-person meetings or congregation, but are used for social distancing during needs of temporary desk space.
Please do not remove any PPE or disinfectant supplies for your own home or personal use. We need to make sure to have these supplies available to the personnel in the building.
All kitchens are closed and used only for storing or heating food and use of the sink.
If you're planning to do any training that requires being in close proximity to each other, we will need to make arrangements with EHS for possible respirator fit testing.
Division Safety Coordinators (DSCs) can review any planned work practices and provide suggestions on working within the restrictions of social distancing, if necessary. Please contact Shraddha Ravani or Chris Rosen.
Until the appropriate safety precautions have been taken, please refrain from performing in-person research that requires working in close proximity to each other. You may need to stagger schedules so that group members can perform necessary tasks.
You may need to email RPP@lbl.gov to request respirator training. You should add the respirator hazard to the appropriate WPC activities. It is a hazard listed as “Using Respirators during COVID pandemic”.
