Outlines and Finals
Look at outlines in the outline bank early, but only to figure out a way to organize and take notes
Outlining at the end of each week will pay off. Just pick on class to prioritize and try to hold yourself to it; it’s possible!
Do old test questions and go over them with your professors
Preparing for Class and Reading Cases
If the case is super long and super important, it probably has a Wikipedia and a YouTube summary. Lean on those!
Utilize Quimbee to supplement when you don't understand a case, but don't rely on it entirely to prepare for class
Find a highlighting method that works for you, a lot of people tend to find color coordinating certain parts of a case (issue, holding, facts, etc.) works well!
Get a book stand
Buy a set of highlighters for home and another to keep in your backpack
Class
Get to know your professors early in the semester before you need help or a reference/recommendation
Bring a notebook and pen to class even if you type notes, this way you're prepared if something happens or if you need to draw a quick chart or diagram
When your professors ask questions, give it a go! Even if you're wrong, it helps you learn and everyone else will be grateful they didn't have to.
Career
Don't be scared to change your career goals
Go to networking events
Talk to professors who were in the same field you want to explore
Have alumni and mentors read and edit your application materials, just be sure to give them enough notice
Involvement
Get involved with pro bono! Not only are you doing something good but you also get exposure to new legal areas and are able to gain experience as a 1L
Student orgs are a great way to make connections, explore legal areas, and find support from fellow students!
Get to know 2Ls and 3Ls as well as alumni
General Advice
Set an agenda for each week
Keep up any fitness routines you had before law school
Meal prep during busy times of the year
Stay in top of your work — it helps with stress.
Find your balance! Law school is one of many things that you do, and it can help to make sure that you still nurture the other dimensions of your life. I found it energizing to build in times to step away from being a law student. It helped to break up the studying, and reminded me that I there is more to life than performing in school. It helps take some of the pressure off!
