Correct & Reteach: Explain to student why it is not okay to put hands on others and the importance of respecting personal space.
Restorative Tasks: Understand motivation behind student's behavior. 1-on-1 mediation with other student involved, if needed.
Replacement Behavior: Student should keep hands to self. Provide positive reinforcement when student keeps hands to self and respects the personal space of others.
Consequences
1st offense: verbal redirection
2nd offense: verbal correction and teacher works with student to identify appropriate behavior to model at school
3rd offense: Removal from play area, individual meeting with student, and student is given another task to complete during recess (i.e. written reflection with appropriate behaviors student can practice next time)
Follow up (if needed)
4th offense: Contact parents; conference with Admin. and SSW, if needed
Correct & Reteach: Explain to student why it is not okay to physically hurt others. Remind student there are better ways of expressing their feelings or getting what they want.
Restorative Tasks: Engage student in understanding impact of behavior through restorative questions. 1-on-1 mediation with other student(s) involved.
Replacement Behavior: Provide space for student to use calming strategies. Teach student conflict resolution skills. Help student with friendship exercises. Assist student with identifying ways of being a bucket-filler.
Consequences
1st offense: verbal correction/redirection, assist student with understanding impact of hurtful behavior on others. 1-on-1 mediation with other student involved.
2nd offense: 1-on-1 mediation and student is asked not to play with that peer for that recess period or is seated away from that peer in the classroom.
3rd offense: individual meeting with student to discuss ongoing issue/underlying causes. Student is given another task to complete during recess (i.e. written reflection, reading about conflict resolution strategies).
*For serious offenses, request SSW and Admin support immediately

4th offense: Contact parents; conference with Admin and SSW.
