“Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play.
Every individual makes a difference.”
~Dr. Jane Goodall
Roots & Shoots is a global community action programme founded by Dr. Jane Goodall in 1991. The programme aims to inspire, empower and encourage young people all over the world. It shows them how to follow their passions, take actions together and become the change our world needs. That way, we can all ensure a better future for people, animals and the environment.

Our mission is to foster respect and compassion for all living things, to promote understanding of all cultures and beliefs and to inspire each individual to take action to make the world a better place for people, other animals, and the environment.
Roots & Shoots empowers young people to become compassionate and creative leaders who will make ethical choices to build a better world.
Established in 2018, Roots & Shoots at Carson Street Elementary STEAM Academy has been engaging students in hands-on, service learning projects which benefit the school community and beyond. We proudly celebrate the accomplishments of our compassionate changemakers.
Showcased below are some student projects.
When our school began serving breakfast in the classroom, Mr. Smith, our plant manager, was hauling lots of food waste from each classroom to the dumpster. That was a LOT of heavy lifting for him. To ease his load, students from participating classrooms brought over uneaten or left over fruits to our new compost bin. We also recruited the assistance of nature's super decomposers... worms (vermi)! After several months, the food waste turned to rich compost! The vermicompost was used for the pollinator garden. Thank you worms (and micro-organisms)!
Many people in our school community have heard of the spectacular gathering of monarch butterflies in Michoacán, Mexico (did you know that this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site? Click here to learn more). We had learned, however, that the monarch butterfly population is in rapid decline and may possibly become listed as an endangered species (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service). We wanted to help these North American migrating butterflies by creating a wildlife habitat on our school yard. Here's what we did. Read our full story here.
During rare Southern California rainstorms, socks and shoes got soaked while entering and exiting this classroom. We also witnessed gallons and gallons of rain water going to waste.
After installing a rain barrel, our feet are now semi-dry and precious water is harvested for our pollinator garden. A win-win idea and design.

As the world continues to struggle with the COVID 19 pandemic, we felt the need to spread more kindness, more than ever. With the support of PTA, for Kindness Week, all students at our school painted kindness rocks, sharing their messages of encouragement, care and love. The R&S members landscape designed the layout of the rock garden where the rocks would be placed for all to enjoy. Here's the story.

The neglected planter in the kindergarten yard. Full of weeds.
This planter was built in 2019 by our supervision aides in the kindergarten yard. It was filled with edible plants until the pandemic forced us all off campus. Now that we're back, for Kindness Week 2022, we decided to bring life back into this cute planter. Here's our story.
Adding our superheroes, worms, to the garden.
Ta-Da! Berries and spring flowers! We hope the kindergarteners will enjoy the blooms.
No watering can? No problem! Scholars invent their own tools by repurposing water bottles with punctured holes. Look at those streams!
May 2022 - Our UC Master Gardener kindly donated a compost bin. Thank you, Kris! The members got right to work to assemble and decorate the gift.
Lessons learned: 1. Not all manuals are helpful... with teamwork, the members figured out how to assemble the bin without directions.
2. Not all acrylic paints are made the same... after the paint had dried, it started to peel....
As the compost begins its process, we will revisit the bin's exterior design next school year.... Till then, happy summer 2022!

On September 28, 2022, our Club was invited to the Los Angeles Roots & Shoots Chapter event in Pacific Palisades with Dr. Jane Goodall. We. Were. THRILLED! All 13 members got to hear Jane's story and message in person, as well as present our 100 Trees Project to fellow environmentalists.
Our members featured in Roots & Shoots social media posts.
At our booth where each member was part of a group which spoke to the attendees about our 100 Trees Project.
Inspired by Dr. Jane Goodall, we wanted to add more plants to beautify our school and support wildlife. We repurposed an old bookcase headed for the landfill to create a "bookcase butterfly garden." In late April 2023, judges from the Los Angeles County Fair visited our novel garden and interviewed our members. Result: we won a 2nd place ribbon! Please click on the Journal below to learn more.

We want our plants to grow big and strong but we don't always have time to water them, especially during summer when no one's on campus. So we assembled a gravity-fed self watering system using ancient technology: ollas.
Assembling and installing the olla irrigation system.
This works because of gravity. The bucket is placed above the soil level which feeds the water into the tubes to the ollas. The water in the ollas is slowly released from the clay pores to feed the plant roots.
2 club members doing the honors of filling up the water bucket so our plants can grow stronger and healthier.
Ta-da! Roots & Shoots club members after putting together the self irrigation system.
The bucket only needs to be filled with water about once a week.
Our members proudly shared their environmental projects with the public at the International Day of Peace event in Los Angeles. We listened to Dr. Jane Goodall's message of peace & hope and got high 5s from U2's Bono!
"Together we CAN, Together we WILL, Together we MUST."
We noticed crows hanging out way too close to our edible garden. How can we keep them away without harming them? Let's create scarecrows! Without spending a penny we reused clothing and found things to use differently to make our scarecrows.
Crows dislike shiny. Found satin ribbon, blings and googly eyes.
Ducktape sticks found on school yard.
Reusing outgrown costume.
Stylists having fun dressing their designed scarecrow!
Update: scarecrows seem to work - no crops disturbed by crows. However, our "chill" scarecrow (on left) disappeared! We miss him 😢
When members were asked, "What is a problem you see in our school community?" "Trash" was most frequent answer. Unfortunately, pollution is a problem even at our school. We decided to do a waste audit and recycling survey to see what we'd discover.

Through hands-on experiences that promote leadership skills, teamwork, critical thinking and compassion, young people become agents of community change. Roots & Shoots is helping young people to understand that we face problems in the world and to enable them to discuss these problems and find some solutions. When young people begin to realize, that what they, their friends and other young people all over the world do is making a difference, this really changes the way they think and creates the feeling of collectiveness: Yes, together we can change the world.
