Message from Mrs Tipple

Well done all of us.

We are now used to talking about how we have had an unpresented 18 months and had to overcome challenges and changes that we never imagined could be necessary. However, it is important that we do remember how we have had to work together, even when it was tricky, and how we have come through the difficult times as a result.

There is still a way to go before we can feel that COVID is not in our every other thought but we can start to feel a sense of normality and a sense of pride of what we have all achieved. We will be reflecting upon and celebrating the resilience, care and commitment of all staff and pupils next week and we would like to applaud you, our families, for the same.

Please continue to take care of yourselves but also enjoy the new horizons ahead.

Have a wonderful summer.

Ducklings Update

Ducklings have been loving their last few days before the summer. On Friday, the children decided they would like to have a picnic in the sunshine. They worked collaboratively to choose the best place for their picnic. The children worked independently to make their own jam sandwiches - delicious!

We are looking forward to our Leavers Service on Tuesday 20th July. The service will begin at 11:15am prompt. More information to follow, please check Parent Mail.

Thank you for all your continued support this year, we wish you a happy and safe summer!

Robins have had a fabulous week exploring our inquiry about how we express ourselves. Last week we worked in pairs to take photos of our friends showing different emotions. We then cut the photos out and stuck them into a book. This week we have been busy writing in our books about the emotion that we are showing within the photo and what makes us feel that emotion. I am so proud of all of the children as a lot of hard work has gone into making these books and Mrs Tipple was so impressed.

In maths we have been looking at even and odd numbers. We linked this to last weeks learning about halving and looked at identifying if a number is even or odd using numicon. The children put the numicon into a mystery bag and asked their friends to guess the number by giving them clues.

To celebrate all of the children's hard work this year, we are going to have a teddy bear picnic on Tuesday 20th July. Please can your child bring in some sort of teddy bear/cuddly toy on that day. The children are going to be making sandwiches in school in the morning.

Year 1 Update

This week, Sparrow class have been reflecting on their time in Year 1. We have reflected upon all of the amazing learning opportunities we have had over the year. To celebrate we decided to write our own poem about key points we remember. We are so excited to share this with you and hope you enjoy our video!

A gentle reminder that if you have any reading books at home please ensure they are brought back into school before Tuesday.

Thank you for all of your hard work and support with the children.

Mrs Smith and I wish you a happy and safe summer holiday and I look forward to working with you all again next year!

Year 2 Update

Children building shape
Children printing with shapes
Children showing off built shape

This week in Blackbirds Class, we have been having so much fun learning about different shapes. We built cubes and tetrahedrons with paper straws and marshmallows (which was really tricky as we wanted to eat the marshmallows!).

"I found making the shapes a little hard because the marshmallows kept running away from me and they were stick!" - Archie

"It was hard to make the vertices because the paper straws kept bending and these shapes need straight edges" - Bloom

"I had a great time because my partner and me worked well together and we kept going even though we found it hard" - Jordan

We also printed with 3D shapes to see how many faces some 3D shapes have. We were also investigating what 2D shapes make up 3D shapes.

"It was really fun but a bit messy!" - Bella-Rose

"We were surprised by the amount of faces some 3D shapes had" - Catalaiya

Year 3 Update

This week has been so much fun as we cooked banana bread! We were all great communicators when cooking as we all had to talk about what steps were next and think about the weight of each ingredient. We had to think about how to stay safe in the cooking zone and to make sure the hygiene levels were high, such as cleaning up after ourselves and washing our hands before we began baking. We decided to do banana bread as it links to the book we are reading for inquiry which is 'The Boy Who Biked The World'. Whilst travelling around the world, he makes banana bread sandwiches! We certainly enjoyed eating it after!

We also completed our science board and we are so proud of it!

Year 4 Update

by Lilly, Shane and Nardin

In maths we have been working on different problems and have been thinking about many types of themes like Sports Day and the seaside. We have used lots of different maths skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication (using our times tables) and we have especially been looking at patterns that happen in our answers and in the questions. We have found this a real challenge and we think Miss Dunn has been trying to catch us out but this hasn't really worked out (luckily for us!) We have had to do lots of conferencing which has really helped us explain our thinking.

Children working together on their inquiry task.
Researching on iPads.
Lots of collaborative work to share our ideas.
Communicating with our friends to share our ideas.

In our inquiry we have been focusing on sources of renewable energy and non -renewable energy. We had lots of questions linked to our lines of inquiry such as: How can we make energy? Where do resources and energy come from? Which resources might run out first and when? We have been using our research skills and used a variety of websites to help us to answer these questions. We have also displayed good communication and thinking skills when working collaboratively with our friends. We have really enjoyed having more time using the chromebooks and being able to add realistic designs and pictures.

Year 5 Update

Over the past few weeks we have been making inventions for the 7 billion ideas project and a few days ago, someone came into the school who designs cameras which travel to space with NASA. He helped us with our designs and which materials would be best suited for specific purposes. He also taught us how to save materials and what he does for a living. We loved meeting him and working with him. We now know how to create product diagrams before refining our designs!

On Tuesday, we were allowed to have a fantastic dodgeball tournament where we had 4 teams. 2 of the teams had 5 players while the other 2 teams had 6 players. This is because we have 22 brilliant athletes in our class and we couldn’t equally divide 22 people without having a decimal. On top of that, it was extremely fun to throw balls around at other people and win some games. Also, It lasted the whole morning!

Through this week we have been writing our student self reflections to put in our memorable portfolios which accompany our finest pieces of work. These self reflections are about Inquiry, Maths and much more. They will be available to all parents to see our brilliant work and self reflections at the end of Year 6.

Year 6 Update

On Thursday, Year 6 was treated to a day out at Mote Park. We were lucky enough to go to the Sky Trail and Dino mini golf, but first we had the challenge of showing how far we can swim. Everyone worked hard and swam for as long as they could. Some of us even achieved our 600m badges but everyone encouraged each other and we were all proud of our achievements. After swimming, we headed into the park for a picnic lunch and a chance to relax. Then it was the moment we had been waiting for - the Sky Trail! Although it was scary for many of us, we all showed our risk-taker learning profile attribute and participated. Even the teachers went up and had a go and we used our caring and communicator attributes to help and encourage them. Later we teamed up to play Dino golf and some of us even got a hole in one - great golf skills!

It was a memorable day and we all had a lot of FUN!

We have now finished our PYP Exhibition. The Google Site will soon be published and shared. We hope that you enjoy reading out about our learning.

Transition

The last few weeks of term can be quite hectic, and pupils may be anxious about transition; which is perfectly understandable. If we are honest with ourselves, change can make all of us feel a little bit worried at times and it is no different for our children. I highly recommend the Big Life Journal website, which has a range of mindfulness activities that are free, easy to do and really do help to ease anxieties and worries. This is the link: https://biglifejournal-uk.co.uk/blogs/blog/5-fun-mindfulness-activities-children-breathing-exercises

Mindfulness is a practice where you use the five senses to engage physically and non-judgmentally with the world around you. When you do a task with mindful awareness, you do it with 100% of your energy and attention.

Any activity can be done with a sense of mindfulness, even eating dinner with your family. For example, you can teach your child to pay attention to the texture and flavours of the food. You can guide them to think about how the food nurtures their body and keeps their body healthy.

Practising mindfulness is incredibly empowering for children. It can help them better manage stress and anxiety when it does occur. It helps with self-regulation, promotes positive emotions and self-compassion.

Mrs Featherstone

Community Liaison Officer

Dear parents/carers,

A gentle reminder that you MUST call the school and report your child absent if they are not going to be in school which is option 1. If you require some advice on what to do if you are unsure if you should send your child in please call myself on option 4. If you are unable to speak to a member of staff then please leave a message and we will get back to you.

  • If your child is going to be late please call the school before hand so we can arrange a member of staff to meet your child at the gate.

  • If your child has a medical appointment please email your proof of appointment to office@oaksprimaryacademy.org.uk

With restrictions due to lift from Monday 19th July please do remember if you or your child have symptoms, you and everyone you live with must immediately self-isolate. Do not leave home until you get your test results, except to post a test kit or for a PCR test appointment.

Reminder about different Covid tests

If you or your child develops symptoms of Covid then you MUST book a PCR test - a lateral flow (LFD) test isn't sufficient if you think you/your child has symptoms. Remember that the symptoms are:

  • a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)

  • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)

  • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

Lateral flow tests are used for people who DO NOT have symptoms as a way of identifying people who may be carrying the virus but aren't actually showing symptoms themselves. All households are recommended to take part in lateral flow testing twice a week to help stop the spread of Covid-19.

Thank you to all who attended the second hand uniform sale, we are looking to do another sale in a few terms time.

Kind regards

Mrs Osborne
