Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an influential American writer and humorist known for his classic novels such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. His works, praised for their wit and social commentary, earned him the title of "the father of American literature" by William Faulkner. Twain's writing career began with journalism after failed attempts in mining, and he gained fame with his humorous short story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. Over time, Twain became a popular public speaker and established relationships with prominent figures like presidents and European royalty.
Despite earning significant wealth from his writing and lectures, Twain faced financial struggles due to poor investments, notably in the Paige Compositor. He eventually recovered with the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers and repaid all his debts. Twain was also known for his strong political views, opposing American imperialism and colonialism. Notably, he predicted that his death would coincide with Halley’s Comet, which proved true as he passed away just a day after the comet’s closest approach to the Sun in 1910.
