◆ This computer art course covers the basic technical skills required for all art and design disciplines. Working in Adobe Photoshop (a pixel-based program), the industry standard, and Bridge, students utilize the computer as their tool for artistic creation. Students will explore the foundations of digital art creation and image manipulation. By exploring the many options available in Photoshop, students learn the toolbox, selection tools, painting tools, the text tool, basic layers, layer adjustments, masking, filters, layer effects, styles, and more.By the completion of several fun projects, students will gain a working knowledge of typography, the color wheel, color harmonies, and the elements and the principles of design. Students will leave the class with a digital portfolio of their own work and with an archival print of their best work This course prepares students to take Digital Art 2.

◆ This computer art course builds on the basic technical computer-based and design skills established in Digital Art I. Students work in Adobe Illustrator (a raster-based program). Students will work towards mastery in the fundamental concepts and the elements and principles of design. Working through several unique projects, students will leave the class with a working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and an understanding of which Adobe product will best fit their design needs. ◆ This is an introductory studio arts and crafts course that offers an introduction to basic design elements and principles, and their applications on the two-dimensional surface and three-dimensional form. Students will develop a range of basic art skills, depending on majority interest, and may use a variety of medium including but not limited to: plaster, wire, paper, recycled materials and fabric. Students will find creative solutions for the different types of projects which might include, but not be limited to, print making, ceramics, painting and sculpture. They will gain an understanding of the vocabulary and materials needed for concept development, through completed art piece. Students will also explore the techniques of the master artists, and professional artists throughout history and present day. They will develop vocabulary necessary to express personal opinions about art through written and oral critiques.

◆ Sculpture explores different art making methods for 3D designs. Students work with books, wire, nylon, wood burning, lino-cuts, ceramics, batik, and enter the recycled art fashion show. Students will discover the connections between Sculpture and other art disciplines as they relate specifically to three-dimensional art. Students will gain knowledge in additive, subtractive, and assemblage techniques as sources of construction.

◆ In this course students will continue to build on the basic technical art and design skills either covered in 2D & 3D or Fine Arts 1. Students will be introduced to the many possibilities and restriction of clay. Studies will primarily include lessons in hand building methods such as pinch, coil, and slab. Students will also explore concepts in sculpture, functional art forms, and wheel throwing. Students will study visual vocabulary and learn to voice personal opinions about art and design. They will learn to give and accept constructive criticism and develop self reflective skills through individual and group art critiques. Art historical movements will also be studied as they relate to student projects.

◆ This studio art course is an upper level class for serious artists who wish to continue to work with clay using the four handbuilding techniques (slab, coil, pinch, and slump mold) and work with the throwing wheel to create 3 dimensional works of art. Students play an increasing role in the development of projects and expand their understanding of ceramic handbuilding techniques and wheel throwing.

◆ This introductory studio art course is designed to provide a foundation for future fine arts courses. Drawing and Painting are learned skills dependent on interest, observation, a basic understanding of the rules and techniques, and practice. Incorporating the elements of design- line, shape, form, value, space, texture, and color, students will develop a range of basic technical skills, and use a variety of mediums including but not limited to, pencil, marker, charcoal, tempera paint and oil pastel. Through free-hand drawing, students will develop the skills necessary to render three-dimensional every day objects, and gain an understanding of perspective and composition. Students will develop an understanding of repetitive patterns through zentangles. Students will study in depth the features of the face and portraiture. With regard to painting, this course will cover color theory, color mixing and paint application. Students will also explore careers in the creative art industry, and gain exposure to the 3.5 million jobs the industry offers a commercial artist. ◆ This intermediate studio art course provides an opportunity for students to expand on the drawing and painting concepts introduced in Fine Arts 1. After building upon their existing knowledge students will gain the confidence necessary for advanced and upper level fine arts courses. Looking closer at the gallery artist, students in this course will engage in a wide range of technical strategies to further explore value, geometric and organic form, landscape, and the abstract. Continuing with the formalistic approach students will gain an understanding of the principles of design-unity, variety, contrast, balance, rhythm, movement, pattern, repetition, emphasis, proportion and scale. Students will also continue to utilize the elements of design while becoming more adept through a broad exposure to various media including, but not limited to graphite, charcoal, marker, acrylic, colored pencil, and watercolor. Students will continue to examine the visual arts in what is known as the formalist approach by independently expanding on their knowledge of the elements and principles of design. Students will play an increased role in determining the media used to complete their work. Exposure to media will include prisma-color markers, printmaking, collage and more. The drawing emphasis in this course is the hands and feet. Students will also use their existing vocabulary to express personal opinions about art and its effect on culture. Prerequisites: There are many ways to satisfy the pre-requisites for AP Studio Arts. Completing Fine Arts 1, Fine Arts 2, Fine Arts 3, and Fine Arts 4 or Taking a combination of at least four visual art courses and gaining permission from the instructor. Finally, if you are a rising senior and you create artwork on your own, but were unable to complete the pre requisites you may qualify with permission from the instructor.
◆ AP Studio Arts is a college level course, and is designed for students who are interested in the practical experience of visual art beyond high school. AP Studio Arts is not based on a written exam; but instead students create a portfolio of college level work for evaluation. Students will investigate processes, materials and ideas. They will experiment, and revise and finally communicate their ideas through the completion of 20 artworks. A qualifying portfolio score can earn a student college credit and or advanced placement. The AP Studio Art Program consists of four portfolios — 2-D Design, 3-D Design, Photography, and Drawing — corresponding to common college foundation courses. Students are required to submit a portfolio at the end of the year, and pay the required fee for submission.

◆ Beginning Photography is a black and white film class. Students photograph with an SLR Camera. This is a semester-long course that will cover the fundamentals of photography and image design. Students will examine the following subject areas: understanding the camera, manual shooting, how to creatively work with aperture and shutter, film exposure, the fundamentals of composition, and printmaking. Students process their own film and work in the darkroom to enlarge, and print their own negatives. While in the darkroom, students learn contrast control techniques and how to burn and dodge to enhance their prints. Specific photographic assignments will place emphasis on the camera controls and visual creativity. The history of photography will be reviewed and students will experience the work of many iconic film photographers, such as Dorothea Lang, Elliott Erwitt, Ansel Adams, and many more. By photographing in manual mode, students are prepared to step into Advanced Photography and/or Digital Photography.
** Students are required to provide their own 35mm manual-style film camera and one lens, rolls of black and white film, and darkroom photographic paper. Students will receive a detailed supply list on the first day of class, and a list of recommended 35mm cameras.

◆ Advanced Photography starts where Beginning Photography ends. This is a semester-long course designed for advanced students who have a sound knowledge of their camera and shooting in manual mode, of film photography, development, and print enlargement. Students will learn more advanced photography techniques in the black and white medium and play with some alternative processes. Students will leave the class with a print portfolio of their work.
**Students are required to provide their own 35mm manual-style camera with one lens. Participants must purchase their own black and white rolls of film and darkroom photographic paper. Students are responsible for the care and maintenance of their gear. Students will receive a supply list on the first day of class.

◆ This course explores the basics of digital camera operation, digital image capture, and the electronic output of photographic images for web use and print media. Students will utilize Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Lightroom to organize and adjust their images. Students will learn photo-editing, correction, and manipulation. Students continue their exploration into photography as a creative medium. Students will also examine the work of today’s iconic photographers, such as Jay Maisel and Cig Harvey. Participants will also explore many popular photo projects which present the world around us. Students will leave the class with a digital portfolio of their work and an archival print of their best image.
**Students are required to provide their own Digital SLR camera, one lens, and a camera card. Students will receive a supply list on the first day of class. Students are responsible for the care and maintenance of their gear.
