Vocational Education

The Vocational Education department is off to a great start of the new school year! At the end of the Summer, we moved into our newly constructed space within the school. Now we are “off and running” for the 2019-20 program! We are so grateful and fortunate to be in such a beautiful and much larger work space! With this new location, we are able to add job areas and tasks that we couldn’t do before. Our goal is to create an environment where all students can work on their skills and level of independence in a functional and meaningful way. This new space will allow us to do just that.

Coming soon will be our student run “SCHOOL SPIRIT SHOPPE”. Langan, Clover patch, and CFDS apparel / gift items will be available for students, staff, families and visitors to purchase. Stay tuned. Also, we are expanding our classroom made tasty treats and samples for sale in our lobby each week. Now 6 classrooms will be baking, cooking and pouring items for our “TASTE OF LANGAN” each week. Thank you classes 1,2,3,4,12,and 14 for your participation in this! Please stop by our lobby to support this great new adventure. Also, come down and visit us in Vocational Education at our new location, Suite 412/414 (near the cafeteria and Center Health).

Speech

February

Cool To Be Kind! Congratulations to the Speech Therapy Department on the awesome WIN in the annual bulletin board contest. “Kindness Is Like A Warm Blanket Of Snow Softly Covering And Gently Touching The Heart”.

This kind group of speech language pathologists goes above and beyond every single day. Extra dining sessions, Augmentative Alternative Communication trainings for staff, dining trainings for staff, accompanying their students and families to medical appointments, offering families activities and tasks to carryover in the home environment, making decorations for special student events, joining schoolwide committees. They will even decorate a colleague’s office door for a special celebration! As one of our most treasured colleagues recently put it; “Langan is thriving partly due to the magnificent talents of the speech department”. This school rocks!!!

November

The speech therapy department along with all of our students would like to say thank you to all of our amazing teacher assistants. We see you. We appreciate you.

Thanks so much! Maraming salamat sa lahat! Gracia por todos!

You help me cook

You help me look

You help me with my book

You’re kind to me

You help me see

You are my family

You stop me from falling

Helped me get past just crawling

Teaching me sure is your calling

All the skills you help me master

Even when I can’t do it faster

All my days are filled with laughter

You help me calm when I’m cryin’

With you by my side I won’t stop tryin’

I’m so proud to be a Langan Lion

I thank you once I thank you twice

I’ll thank you on my speech generating device

Can’t thank you enough for being so nice

THANK YOU!!

OT and PT Department

October

The Langan OT/PT Department is busy getting ready for the new school year. We have had a few changes in our staffing this year. Over this past summer, our long time Physical Therapist Pieter Hiemstra retired after 33 year of service to our Center and our Langan School program. We wish Pieter a long , healthy, and happy retirement. AND we are happy to welcome Physical Therapist Laura Shemo back to our staff after having been away for the past year and a half. By now, you should have received a letter with the names and contact information for your student’s treating Occupational and Physical Therapist. Please feel free to contact the therapists working with your student if you have any questions , concerns, or just to introduce yourself. We are looking forward to a wonderful year and can’t wait to see your children’s’ amazing growth and accomplishments over 2019-20.

October is National Physical Therapy Month

Pictured above is our AMAZING Langan Physical Therapy team. These dedicated and highly skilled clinicians work tirelessly to support our students, families, and classroom teams.

Trick or Treat from the Langan OTs and PTs

Every year, the creative members of this fun loving group come up with a great Team Costume. Special thanks from those of us who are less creative for all your efforts to make us all look great!

SAC (Social Activities Club)

February

Our SAC students have been busy making Valentine's Day cards for some favorite staff members. These students are so compassionate!

SAC (Social Activities Club) turns Sweet 16 in November! Our first shift SAC students worked on this awesome school bulletin board to celebrate the milestone. SAC was developed by Kathy Lewis, who in 2003 became Langan’s Dining Supervisor. Langan has many students who cannot eat orally and who rely on G-tube feedings for nutrition. The club was created for these students in order to provide them with activities while their classmates eat their lunch in the cafeteria. SAC leaders are volunteer TAs who plan and lead the group in a variety of stimulating activities. Some popular ones are Sensory Time, Fun with Music, Competitive Game Time, and of course Arts and Crafts.

Thank you to all of our SAC leaders. We appreciate the dedication and extra time our leaders give to help make SAC a fun experience for our students. Great job: Chris Bonnabeaux, Courtney Caldwell, Cheyenne Darrow, Jean Famiano, Neille Nuqui, Flo Quaye, Marinna Flagg, A’sha Jones, Analiza Manonguiring, Chris Raimo, Melana Williams, and Fiorella Rojas.
