Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! I am pleased to be your math teacher at Lakeland High School, and I look forward to working with you this year. Our exciting math curriculum is designed to help you make connections between our classroom and the world around us. My goal is to provide a rich and challenging program to help you grow in your ability to do mathematics in preparation for college math.
A successful math experience requires much classroom participation. Students will be expected to work cooperatively in groups or with a partner, sharing their mathematical thinking, as well as listening respectfully to the ideas of others.
All assignments should be done neatly, in pencil, and must show your work and/or thinking. Homework will be given almost daily, and will be due the following day at the beginning of the class period.
If you are ABSENT, it is your responsibility as a student to find out what you missed and get the assignment completed. I will post recorded lectures that students can watch even when they are not able to attend class. Students will not be allowed to make up quizzes or tests during class time.
To ensure success, I feel it is very important to keep the lines of communication open. I update Skyward at least once a week, so you can check your child's progress. I know that you as parents know your child best, so when there is a concern, please feel free to contact me via e-mail so that I can get back to you in a timely manner. We can also schedule a meeting before or after school. I will check e-mail and phone messages daily.
If your child is spending more than 45-60 minutes on their math homework because it is too difficult, please have them STOP, write a note on what is causing them difficulty, and talk to Mrs. Mattila the next morning. I am available for extra help starting at 7:10 AM, and you should encourage your student to come and ask when they have questions.
